I think it may be butternut? Was working beech and have a good red oak to cut up-started early and finished by noon-its hotter than da**it here-had to cut up the tops so the output of beech was not what I hoped for but I'm cleared and ready to cut up a bunch of beech and red oak next trip image.jpg image.jpg

If you look close at first pic, it has the little curley fruit like things-the wood has a yellow hue-

That looks a lot like the black walnut I was working on at my sister's house this weekend. It was just starting to sprout leaves too. That's the only walnut I've ever cut though, and I havent seen any butternut around here.

image.jpg I think with the straight splitting beech I may make a go of it and try and mix it in the stack with that crazy gnarled maple-maybe get a rack full-the maple off the stump was 40% MC-say the beech is near same

Eric VW Buddy it was good til the sun hit the bottom of the hollow-this is freaking July/Aug weather-clearing those tops took most of my time today but I got it right for ripping when I return-Im a 51 yo one man op-got to pick your battles ya know?> image.jpg
Hard to see but these trees were dropped across a steep ravine, thats why I used the tow strap to pull part of that beech into the landing-more of it remains, plus another beech and red oak-next trip rippin!

Shawn Curry -coincidence friend-the tires are courtesy of my lovely dope fiends in the hollow-I have them all over from there up the hill---aside from everything wrong with them, they snake the crap out of me-what better hiding place for a cucumber smelling copper head? I quit stressing over them years ago though-at least they are too lazy to poach or have lost all their teeth and can't eat deer meat now-only prob is there's always another generation of them you and I pay for....oh well, let's work on some wood:dex:

I dont think its a black walnut-I can get more pics, waiting for some of our more "seasoned" vets to chime in-I'm pretty sure its hard wood-You can see it on the right in the pic with the beech and red oak

For sure, Ashwatcher. I think the early conclusion is based on the appearance of the HW and the rather young bark profile.... But yer right, let's get more seasoned input, yes?

Most compound leaves look like that when they first open up. It's probably too early for flowers or fruit. Ash could look like that too, but I liked the twigs better for walnut too. I saw an awful lot of them this weekend, so I could just have walnut on the brain, who knows? :loco:
