ok a good friend of mine gave me this little trailer and I need to build some sides for it. I know there a ton of plans online, but has anyone built one specifically for collecting rounds out in the woods? Looking for tips to make this thing useable.

    Since everyone always asks:

It's 4'x 8'. Perfect for cutting a facecord worth and that's all I want. Used to be a camper of some sort, I think my friend said.

It might not hold much but climbing into the Durango to stack rounds is getting old.

3/4" pressure treated sheet of plywood down for the deck... I see it's got pockets all around for side panel stakes. 2nd sheet of 3/4"... strip 12" sides out of it. Could use aluminum 3/4" edging strips to protect them from pieces hitting them along the top edges. My 2 cents...
    Nice trailer size, btw.

yeah joe, made one same way out of old boat trailer I see if I can get some pics onto tablet..3/4 Pressure treated plywood held with carriage bolts for base built in 1995 still works.. redoing sides now they no longer make quarter inch plywood treated... was held on with half inch galvanized electrical conduit with straps bolted 2x4, base...

    3/4 treated plywood would work
treated 2x6 or 2x8 would work too. (leave a gap between, small stuff & water can fall thru)

""Y" at the front , a good tool box & spare tire location
Also ; Could mount a hand winch there to winch logs on

Could make permanent or removable plywood front & sides with 2x4 stakes .
Of all the mods I made I love the
Hinged folding tailgate ramp, easy to roll, walk on, or hand truck stuff on & off .

Looks to be a 3500 lb axle, 5 hole wheels?
Get it licensed & you have a really versatile trailer with tons of uses, from yard equip, lumber, gravel ...

GREAT score but the way

I bought one like over 20 years ago. I put down 3/4" plywood for the floor (pressure treated) and built sides and a front out of treated 2x4s. Used that for everything for a few years, and still use around the house for clean up.

I use 4x8 trailer with sides and a food down ramp in back.
The plywood will work, but you'll collect a lot of crap from the wood. The one I use has mesh metal floor. All the crap falls through which is awesome. A side panel or tailgate that you can roll the heavy ones up will help a ton.

You can get a 1/2 cord on it no issues. I do it all the time. Less trips, nice manageable size trailer. IMG_20150502_125134026_HDR.jpg

Serious potential, Joe. Cost vs. durabilty, I'm with bogydave, 2 x's and perhaps even 5/4 treated deck boards would let wood trash & water thru easily. But, the way treated wood is anymore when you go to the lumber yard or Lowe's- it's wetter than fresh cut green Oak- You would see them boards spread apart 1/4" in 2 weeks even if you packed 'em tight... Of course that's only my opinion.
Can't wait to see the finished product pics!!!

That's pretty much how I made the sides to my trailer, but I used tongue and groove to make it more enclosed. I also used angle brackets on the insides to keep it all tight.. Personally I'd make the floor out of pressure treated 2X10's though. That'll be a lot tougher than plywood. And I don't care for mesh bottoms, you have to lay down a tarp to haul mulch or dirt and it's harder to shovel it out then.

I ended up making a fold down tailgate out of wood as well, and it's strong enough for me to drive my ztr up it and makes rolling rounds in the back a lot easier.

I would use 5/4 decking for the sides.

Just place pins on the side and you can transport wood in 8' lengths.

Neither me, or my buddy thought we'd like the metal mesh floor, but we love it. If we need to haul mulch or whatever, a tarp works fine. I will get that out soon as well be getting mulch and hauling it in the trailer. I would think the last half a foot or so of mulch you could just lift the tarp up, and dump it. It's more for firewood and toy hauling.

You could do something like this; images.jpeg

…..or just get a about 16 5/4" PT deck boards and a few 2x4's. Look's like you already have the stake pocket's. That's a great start for a wood getter!

You buy that or build it? Looks like it could come in handy.

It was bought. $500 on sale last fall.

It's my buddy's trailer, but it's already paid for itself.
