Just received a pair o' chaps and combo helmet/face shield/earmuffs. Always been at least gloves, steel toes, & safety glasses.... Might be putting some suspenders to use on those new chaps- the boots already have the ankles and shins covered, but the chaps will sink without some higher up help!!!
Oh yeah, forget PPE with this gal-
Honest question here- is she purposely skewing the ax head to her left when it strikes, or is that the effect of the the dbl head? Her motion looks like that crazy shaped ax (vipukirves) that kicks off to the side when it hits.... Am I right about her technique, or do I have googley eyes from watching this Dame:binoculars:?!
Perhaps I just never learned that style of splitting?
Notice tho, she seems to only get stuck(on a straight down stroke) once.
IDK, could be the after dinner drinks!

My bro splits by hand and I've seen him use that twist too. Kinda "levers" the split apart I guess. Not the kind of levers I like tho...

My uncle showed me that slight twist just as you make contact technique many moons ago. Works good for small dry straight grained wood like cedar and poplar. I find the splits pop off with less force and effort. Like Stinny said, it kind of levers them off.

Another tip/trick he taught me years ago is when you get into the big stuff with the maul was to try and split the splitting block that your piece is sitting on when you swing. People have a tendency to let up when they get to what they are swinging at. Just like baseball or golf, you have to swing through the target. Works real well for me.;)

When felling - helmet with mesh shield and muffs, leather gloves, work boots (not steel or composite toes). I don't wear chaps, but should. I hate how uncomfortable they are.
When bucking - earmuffs or plugs, gloves. Occasionally I will wear safety glasses but I don't like them either. Am I stupid for not wearing glasses or chaps? Yes.
I do have a pair of Stihl chainsaw pants that I have never worn. Probably should consider them.

Safety work boots, leather gloves, foam ear plugs plus chainsaw helmet with ear muffs and Kevlar chaps.
If I'm blocking up a lot of logs with lots of moss and lichen growth on them, I may also wear a 3M dust mask to prevent inhaling spores.
I'm well prepared to stay safe and healthy.

Yes, she's doing it on purpose. It lets her axe work like the patented lever axe without being so weird looking as that single purpose tool. That axe she is using would also work for felling, it is sharp. The double bit axe has a nice heavy off center head when you first touch the wood with the axe at a small angle. As the head pivots around its center of gravity you get the prying action happening.

all brands have good pants , i always use pants than chaps
if you want good pants you must see the protection class are 1 , 2, 3 the best is 3 but heavy
also see what desighn is this protection, design A or C the A cover only in frond legs, the C cover around
theese are the first that you must look for pants, then what materials have example waterproof, windproof, high visibility, and many others
for helmets the more futurist and best in the market is the pfanner protos but cost about 200 euros but and the others are good try to buy with metal mesh.
for boots - shoes is the same as the pants class 1,2,3
good gloves are the stihl and the arbortech with class 1 and antivibe but little expensive

    hope i help you

In winter, I wear jeans and hiking boots and a long sleeved shirt. I have a forester helmet with muffs, cut-resistant gloves (see glove thread) and Stihl chaps I bought off craigslist. I usually wear sunglasses or safety glasses to keep dust out of my eyes too. I should have steel toes on too, I know.

What do you guys wear for pants in summer? I know if I try to wear jeans in the sun I will melt in minutes. I'm imagining a light, breathable pair of pants that keep the wood chips out and keep the chaps from sticking to me.

So I'm I'm getting ready to some cuttin' & splitting and a coworkers house this past Friday, get my PPE together(gloves not pictured) and he and his wife start laughing at me and he snaps this pic(granted as soon as he pulled his phone out I thought, "let's make this count!"). Tells me he's gonna print it off and put it on the bulletin board at work- fine with me- let those hard heads see how it's done!
    So, here we go-

Would it be wrong to have a glass of captain on your hand?

I'm only a part time stalker with my busy daytime work schedule.
What's even scarier is that you and I look a lot alike. I suppose I need to post a picture now.

Thanks FHC for helping me find my doppelganger.

Well used pair of Labonville chaps, older helmet, new Oregon helmet, cut resistant gloves, ear plugs. I need to invest in steel toed boots!

The chaps go on every time, even if just making a few test cuts, and they saved my legs more than once.

Gloves are "Cut Less" (pretty creative). No insulation so they are too cold in the winter but otherwise work well.

Great post. All us weekend warriors need to see the evidence of chaps that have saved your skin.

    BTW.
I use Labonville FULL WRAP chaps. Eye, ear (foam in ears and ear muffs over), hand and foot/toe protections. I make my living with my eyes, so I always wear safety glass and usually use a mesh face screen. Please remember, wire mesh face masks are NOT designed to be used alone. ALWAYS wear glasses. Just sayin'
