The local bee keepers were not able to harvest enough honey around here to sell a lot. I know of several who just didn't have enough for a number of reasons this year. I balk when the price gets too high. A five gallon batch of mead needs 12 pounds or so of honey.

My apple/pear wine was from the trees in my yard, I have three pear, two apple, a plum, and a peach tree growing just for the purpose of jams, jellies, sauce, fermenting, and pies. The oldest trees just hit bearing time this past season. The rhubarb was planted by me in 2008, moved in 2010 and basically was available for heavy harvest this past season. The blackberries were from the 95 acres behind the house, not enough raspberries or they would have made it into the mix. Slowly getting there. Still adding to the bottle collection (both brew and canning).

There are large water bottles available at Walmart to use as secondaries. The local supermarkets also are a source for 5 gallon pails and lids to make fermenters or bottling buckets from.

Currently in various stages I have 3 ales, a hard cider, 3 wines, and a spiced mead. Likely after the holidays I'll start an imperial stout. I need more bottles again.

That's right , there's some heat involved during the brewing process... Sounds like you have a nice supply of fruit and berries ...

I don't know just why, but Micro breweries are doing very well here in Maine. Very good investment for the right person trying to step out on their own. Also, there seems to be a lot of interest in home brews. Lots of stores with supplies. I think the concern is price point. If you are carful like Smokey is, you can get into this hobby, have a lot of fun, and enjoy the results.
I can't have ETOH because of my meds that I see little hope of ever getting off from. I sneak a few ounces of beer once or twice a year, haven't noticed any negative effect. It just can be so good with outdoor cooking, or with a pizza. Especially when you have friends around.

In Michigan our economy is terrible and the Craft Brew sector is one are that's exploding! The effect extended to home brewers too. You can buy a complete kit with everything you need or want for that matter around $170 then it's just the beer recipes to worry about.
