Freaked me out when I went out to work on this big Oak looked almost pink in the sunshine.... But mostly Orange. What type of tree? Gets worse. Warning ! Pretty gross. Finally a dry shot.
Not a Dogwood tree, but I can't say what type of tree it is. Maybe a Black Willow? I think the orange stuff is sap that is colored by fungus or bacteria. I bet the sap wasn't orange when it first came out of the tree.
Smells a little sweet. I expected to find bugs attracted to the sap /slime but didn't. Noticed this elsewhere in the woods. Very hard wood.
Not sure if it's a dogwood or not, but here's an article I found: http://www.walterreeves.com/gardening-q-and-a/dogwood-bleeding-orange-sap/
Very interesting. Is Dogwood the same as Ironwood? Second tree has no " flowers" or large blooms. It cuts almost as hard as Osage Orange.
No, but both dogwood and ironwood are very hard, dense woods. Ironwood would have been my guess for the second one based on the bark and apparent size. It sounds like it's a type of yeast contaminating the sap, that causes the orange color, so the phenomenon is not limited to dogwood - it could happen to any tree that bleeds sap. The orange color is from beta-carotene produced by the yeasts. This sounds like the stuff of late-nite infomercials! Dr Deacon's Eagle Eye formula: his "secret ingredient" is a rare form of tree sap found in Eastern Nebraska, which studies have shown that it may slow age-related macular degeneration!
Shawn, This is your lucky day. I just happen to have 1 extra bottle "Dr. Deacons Eagle Eye formula & Wart remover " that I would trade for some Maple syrup.
