    Cuts like butter and throws some great chips but doesn't smell like anything I know. It's not ash, maple or box elder. It splits well with the splitter too.

    Looks like Tulip poplar to me....has a greenish heartwood.

    It does split well also.:)

    Yea looks like poplar. Don't feel bad I cut one down for the neighbor before I really looked to see what it was.

    Tulip poplar is yellow poplar, it's better than your aspen type poplar. Tuplip poplar falls on the charts around 16 mil BTUS, the Aspen type poplars are around 14.5 mil BTUS. Not much better but still better. :)

    But it is not like most of the poplar you get around here. I was not even aware there was any of it in MI until a few years ago. Actually the first time I ever saw one was in PA.
