I'm loving this post. Mine have grown a great deal since I got them on March 11. I'll post pics later today. About 65 percent done with the coop.
lukem don't know if your home or not, but half dollar sized hail right now in ur area. Your chickens want a house lmao.
Just talked to the wife and no hail. Looks like it just missed us. They have a metal roof on 3/4 of their tractor so they should be good.
I mixed some year old chicken poop with the soil in the potato boxes the other day. It looked like rich, black soil and had no smell to it. Wife wanted me to put some of it on her hibiscus and wisteria, but that wasn't gonna happen.
My neighbor raises chickens and gets lots of people stopping asking for manure. He says it's better than cow manure. I'm not sure.
I went to the local TSC and was hanging around the chicken pens just looking. Caught the youngest assistant I could find and asked how much per pound they were, and about how many per person would be a proper serving. The look was priceless.
Daughter's Golden Sex-Links. Egg laying machines. Second generation rooster (they don't breed true, they're a type of chicken not a breed), neighbor's dog got his tail feathers
Took them outside today, weather was cloudy and about 50, let them loose on a 5x5 tree enclosure and they had a blast. they were out there for about 3 hours. Loved it. Coop is almost done, my plan is to enclose 3 sides and the one side use chicken wire for the summer time and once the winter hits, i will hang the side as an entire hanging door. For the mean time I will leave the one side exposed to ventilate it. Checked with the town today and they are cool with it. As long as the chicken wire holes are small to prevent rats from entering. I will probably overlap two sheet of chicken wire and make the holes even smaller.
Yep! I have also heard that chicken poop is in great demand by marijuana growers in the states where it's legal. It has something to do with the poop being just right nutrient wise for those plants. Just be careful if you trade poop for brownies
That's a real treat for them! Mine are always hanging around the wood pile munching every bug they can find. It's kinda funny to be stacking or splitting and find a random egg in the pile.
Gold sex links are egg laying machines! We had some for a bit but lost them to predators... So far Ameracaunas are the only ones we've kept that seem to not be victims
I've found that of different color chickens black seems to be the best surviving, for me at least. Maybe harder for predators to see.
Oh yea they love them too. But these where the Big Black Army Ants.... This is like the 3rd or 4th colony that I've found so far in this big Oak tree that I got.
Yep, the lighter the color, the first to go around my place. My problem is always figuring out who's the culprit...
