Here's the zoom in as best as I could on the splitter. As long as the splitter is solid, it's worth that alone. Plus oak and locust too, makes it a good deal. The sweet gum, I can't comment on. But if it's rotten and low btu anyway, roll it away in the dump.
I agree, Its hard to get rid of wood around these parts.. I'm going to look for a good spot to dump it.
If I were you, I'd get the deal done, take all the wood and hold up your end to get the splitter. Disposal of crap wood if it isn't good is something I'd worry about after you get the splitter and the wood.
The newer splits that are solid add to a shoulder stack cover and season The one's sitting by that fence scream - sweetgum stacked in rounds for 2-3+yrs. find a place to kick them off
Do the deal, even if the splitter needs any work, well worth that! I have two splinters, the older one is a 33 ton and depending on the job we still use it, work great and splitters that size are easy to move and stage etc.... I sold firewood until my splitters were paid for, so if there is more than you need you and no forum guys are close, you could sell a load or two?
I guess I could sell a few loads, it's just that at this time of the year, no one around here usually buys wood, but I'll think about it and see if I could make it work.
Those spindly balls on the ground that I think I see in the 2nd picture are a sure sign of sweet gum also. Your town doesn't have a compost drop off? It might be worth getting a small dumpster in his yard, cleaning up the crap on your dime and taking the splitter.
I agree, Paul bunion! Those things are all ova the place at my parents in the Northern Neck of Virginia! My folks burn sweet gum a LOT! They hate splitting it with their 5T electric splitter, tho.
Having never split sweet gum before, why is it so tough to split? Does it get stuck to the splitter like old chewing gum?
I got a load of sweetgum last spring from a tree guy and it was almost impossible to split by hand..I had to use the chainsaw to quarter it. Maybe because this stuff is bigger and green it's popping easier, I'll just use his monster splitter to git r done.
I would have a bon fire in my back yard get a dumpster anything so I could get the splitter. Hell put the wood in your driveway for a few days until you can get rid of it
Run an ad on Craigslist for free wood have them take what you don't want and cut your work load in half and everybody wins. That's the kind of deals I always try to make plus meeting new people with the same wants and needs only helps to establish a network. The other thing I have learned about a "Homerun" like this is that being in the right place at the right time is what's all about. Great score.
I asked him about running an ad on criagslist, he wanted nothing to do with it. I'm going back today to get whatever I can loaded and brought home. He said he had other people coming this weekend, so I'm gonna try and get that splitter before someone else gets it. I also found a place to dump the junk wood, but it's gonna cost money. Just not sure how much yet.
Even a modest gas splitter will cost you 6-800 used, new 1k+ What kind of woodhauler do you use - probably should have asked before we taunt you into loading this rotten stuff in a hatchback
I have a GMC Sierra 1500, 4x4 ,248,000 miles on her. It's just a stock pickup. Runs like a champion, and have had very few problems. I think I'm just going to go there Sunday morning, and take as much of the good stuff as possible, then just offer him 450 cash on the spot, and see what he says.. I was thinking about this all day, and get the feeling this guy is just dangling this splitter in front of everyone who comes for wood.. He said everyone that comes in his yard asks about it. im set up with him to show up sunday morning at 8am, so we'll see..
I know, Im just not sure I'm going to have the time to get it done before someone else swoops in, im jammed up every weekend in spring with kids activities.. I need a good day of hauling.
