mdavlee would get a good kick out of this. Bought a pair of goofy files and tried my hand at a square chain last night. O it's all bad. Lmao. Think I need to start with a square ground to see the proper file angles. Anyone used the atop guide? I'll try and get some pics tonight. At least it'll bring a smile to someone's face. :hair:

They cant be any worse than mine were when I first started !

I have tried the Atop, and it only uses single bevel square files ........... don't like that those files don't last too long
It works pretty good, but is rather pricey, besides you can do square without it.

Bacho or Save Edge double bevel files are what I purchase for work chains.
Everything else either dulls out too fast or deforms and doesn't give as sharp of a corner

That chain you show a picture of above looks to have the taller sidecutter associated with the single bevel, but it is real nice to know that the Atop can use the double bevel.

Guy north of me in Sandusky used 6 sided 100% with atop. He could make chain with his that was faster then mine.

I had $0 in mine as I was a tester. ;) Also you dont have to use their rollers. You can make your own.
Some of the rollers I had didnt get sold with the store units.

Square has a different learning curve.

If I ever get free time I've been wanting to try to build a jig for square filing that would be cheaper than the Atop.

What about the guys using file and joints converted to use a double bevel file ? Anyone have any luck setting one up?

If you do this, count me in for one. Or if anyone has an atop for a decent price I'm interested. Just can't seem to do it right freehand and $200 is pretty steep for a file guide imo.
I'm sure you would have zero problems selling them.

I'm going to try to build one this summer. If it works for a few guys I'll have a machine shop make a few to sell then.

If you need a dummy who can't square file to test one for you, I'm your huckleberry.

If you could keep your costs down and sell them for, say $100 or so, you could clean up pretty well.

I know that most all the guys on the saw sites would buy one for sure.

How about making inserts to utilize the good ole fashioned Fil-n-Joint. They're a good tool, and repeatable..
