Mine come with a deflector for the muffler it's optional held in with two screws but helps deflect the fumes engine wise I really don't notice that it's loud myself I guess I just get in the mode of splitting and don't pay attention

The Honda GX engines are pretty quiet, the Subaru Robin series are as well. I'd buy either of those on a splitter more for the metrics of the engine, but the noise level is a bonus.

I also like my Robin engine, and I usually run it at half speed, or so.

Add me to the Subaru fan club. My Ariens 27 ton has the Subaru and it's fairly quiet and sips its fuel...

I use a 13 hp Predator engine from Harbor freight on mine with the muffler pointed away from the the workers. Not bad without hearing protection but I still use ear plugs most of the time.

My MTD 27 ton has a 6.5 B&S Quantum. It much quieter than my last splitter and others I've been around. Not sure how it compares to high end motors.

When I run the splitter for extended periods I use foam plugs plus earmuffs.
If you want quiet then you can buy an electric splitter and run a quiet generator or place the generator at the end of the extension cord away from your work area.

I always wear ear muffs that have a radio. Makes the time go by faster and I can keep up with Rush Limbaugh.:salute:

The same principles will apply to electric machines, lower the RPMs, and the noise will drop. It's much quieter to turn 2X the pump at half-speed.

With electric, the option to start/stop the pump when needed is a big factor with noise as well. The smaller electrics already do this but using a foot switch or similar to control a larger machine is quite simple too.

I agree that if you can run at low RPM's you greatly reduce the sound level. I have a Honda GX270 that runs just a smidge over idle and its pretty quiet. I still wear muffs though.

A 10 cent pair of ear plugs works well. I have also used running ear buds that wrap around the ear and stay in place. I now use a pair of silcone molded ear plugs with integrated headphones. From when I read up on the actual manufacturer, they make race car communication equipment, I bought them at a large shoot I attended and love them little pricey at about $150 but they are repairable if they are damaged and are formed to the individual's ear to get a good seal. I wear them for shooting, using the chainsaw and splitter and cutting grass on the riding mower, just a hum of the engines and music.

Kind of an obscure reference, but on the same principle....
California air tools manufactures several compressors that run at 1725 rpm, the result is somewhere around 58db

I wear earplugs when I use my little electric; my friend thinks I overdo the noise thing but I like being able to hear the crickets .

This is the biggest reason i bought a splitter for my tractor. The tractor is very quiet. Its one of the few pieces of equipment i dont have to wear ear muffs on.

Lots of good stuff here folks. However, my main objective was to find a super-quiet electric log splitter I can operate outside in the driveway after my kids and neighbors turn in for the night. I've heard lots of "whiney" electric splitters. I've got ear protection galore, but having to use it was not my objective.
