Another great idea I never thought of. I might pull the surround next season and see if I can get a little more out of my insert.

Not sure where you might order from but I ordered my NC13i from Ace Hardware and chose ship to store for free. Then I paid that actual store $100 to deliver it to my home out of town. They brought it in a pickup, two men (no lift gate) unloaded it uncrated it and brought it in. Nice young fellers, but I had to show them how to take the door off and firebrick out so they could get it in ....

Looks like I will have to wait until another day. The wife isn't feeling well today and wants a fire in the stove. I guess I will wait until after burn season and do it when I clean the chimney .

I have considered a rear exhaust but I still haven't seen one that is as big as I like and still work in the space I have. I don't want to go in front of the fireplace because we just don't have the floor space to spare, so I would like it to sit partially in the fireplace like my current stove. For a short term solution I might get a free Timberline insert from a friend and wait until I have enough money saved to modify my fireplace and buy a stove that we would really like ( possibly a Woodstock Hybrid). Thanks for the great responses.

If you are thinking of running an insert without the blower I think you will lose out on some heat as they have the dbl jacket for forcing the air through. That will just serve as an insulator and cause it to run a lot hotter. Getting the BTUs off the stove and onto the room is going to be difficult.

As far as looks go my Quad is an ugly sheet metal box behind the surround. I wouldn't want to install it without.
