The following conversation between my wife and I last night: Wife: what the house temp is set at. Me: I set it to 66. Wife: it's not 66. When is the last time you checked the oil tank level. Me: We got an extra 100 gallons last time. We should be fine. House is set to 66 and it's 59. Hmmm. Outside I go. Grab my stick to check the level. Drop it in, and it hits bottom. Bone dry again. Ugh. Me: Going to town to get some diesel. Be back shortly. 15 gallons later and the hot water heater and furnace lines have been bleed and we are back in business. After all of this was done, I sat there thinking about just how cold the winter was this year. Makes perfect sense that we ran out. Ugh. Now my line of thinking is that had we put in a pellet stove this year, we'd not have run out of oil. A pellet stove has now moved to the top of our list for sure. Wife called today for 0il, and they brought us 100 gallons.
Delivery was $2.74/gallon. Pump was a little over $3/gallon. If it was not late at night, I'd have called the oil company for delivery. Not willing to pay 50 or 75 for a special delivery in the evening. The 15 gallons get us through the night.
Boettg, I've got two fuel oil tank gauges in the trunk of my car. Probably be good for your tank since they both read empty now!
Let me get a picture of my tank. You'll understand then why I do not have a gauge on the tank. That tank needs to be replaced with two 275 gallon tanks, but I've yet to pull the plug on the old one.
Been there, done that, several times. I guess I never realized you could use diesel fuel in an emergency. I've only had oil for a couple of years. Thanks for the tip.
Just keep in mind Mike that diesel fuel works in furnaces but if someone has a space heater that takes fuel oil, then diesel fuel won't work. Not many of those space heaters still around though methinks. It is just good to know the difference.
