Ran out of "real" pellets, and being it is supposed to warm up in a few days, I only need a few bags. there are no heating pellets available, so I bought 10 bags of equine bedding, same cost as Somersets. Well they are pine and they burn hot and clean, if I was going to be here next winter I would definitely buy a couple ton. Available year round and no perceived premium being sold as heating pellets in the middle of heating season. I am sure if I go into TSC and buy a ton at a time the manager would discount them, making them cheaper too. edit based on two days burning, they are burning slower because they seem to be hotter, less consumption. stove set the same.
I burned them too no issues ,just have to pay taxes on them ,not considered a fuel in PA ,but at $ 5.30 / bag not a deal breaker for a hot burning soft wood
Same here. We've all burned them at one time or another haven't we? They are normally $6.00 but often go on sale for $5.00. They do charge tax here as well. If you buy them at $5.00, even with the tax, they are much less than some other brand name pellets around here! I really like pine pellets, have bought and burned ~5 bags of these in two different seasons. One batch was better than the other. They tend to create a fireworks show in your stove, like the AWF WPs. I have read that the lighter colored ones are much better than the darker / greyish colored ones.
I've thought about buying a bag or two to try out, but haven't tried them yet. My wife used to have a couple rabbits and used those pellets in the trays under the cages. That was before I knew what a pellet stove was. No tax free pellets here. MI has a 6% general sales tax, but our lawmakers are kind enough to only charge 4% on heating fuel (oil, propane, wood pellets).
Yep, Burned a ton or so back in early 2K when we had a pellet crunch. The same year I found out softies aren't gonna kill my pellet eater like some said they would. About all we could get that season were western softies. Dem Hard headed hardwoods burners turnt on der oil suckers and I burned me some of the best softies I've ever found. Pinnacle western fir, Blazers, Eureka's, Bear Mountains, and Heartlands to name a few. Along with the pine bedding Agway and Blue seal had. Also my first season with a pellet corn mix.
Lastest trick is to tax on the msrp price and not the sale or discount price - this is a gov. driven revenue scheme not the retailer . In some areas there is a VAT tax as well which is on the total including sales tax ( yep tax on tax) not mention any taxes ,tariffs, import duties and a host of others buried in the msrp to start with.
I loved burning these, but they are almost $6 a bag near me. I have tried 2 different brands and the TSC brand was hotter and cleaner. I would burn them 100% of the time if the price was a little lower.
Yes made the same way, But some don't screen or clean them as much as a fuel pellet. So the draw back could be more fines. Only risk might be auger clogging if they have excessive fines. But I never saw them have enough to actually clog the auger.
I NEVER had an auger get "clogged" with fines from any brand pellet in either of my 2 stoves made by different manufacturers.
Mine either. All 3 had no fines issues. But had a bud with a breakwell err Oops! I mean Breckwell that had an auger issue. Running them through your vacuum contraption thingy majig would cure any fines issue.
Actually, after my 2 daughters were off to college, I stopped running the pellets through the cleaner. My older daughter was the one with the asthma problem. The last winter I had the stove, I just dumped the whole bag in and never gave it another thought. When I first started burning pellets in the Astoria, did the same thing. Never had any clogs or issues w/ fines.
