Leek season is just around the corner, just some older pics of those nasty little things. You can smell them before U C them, the whole woods will smell like Leeks.
Wow zap, you're greening up already? Woodwidow, remember Forrest Gump and the shrimp? That's kinda like thewoodlands and leeks.
That's right on the money about smelling first! Sometime in the last 10 years, 99 and I went for a spring ride on the atv and when I stopped she asked why. I told her I could smell leeks and would she like some? Yeah right, was the response I got. Within a few minutes, she was saying, that's more than enough, what are we going to do with these? Did you really smell them?
Wow that's a lot of leeks. How long does the season last? I really like the part in Forest Gump where they were talking about all the things you could make with shrimp. I guess you could do the same with leeks.
They'll start popping through the ground not long after the snow goes, I think from the 3rd week in April to the last week in May, I never have really kept track. We usually make the Leek soup and also use them in our spaghetti sauce.
I was wondering how you went from pics of getting trees out of the snow covered woods to fields of leeks in such short order.
What I can't get over is how little underbrush you have in the trees. I think I have mentioned it before. I have always thought of leeks as just another variety of onions. Used in any recipe that calls for onions. I will have to buy some and try them out again.
Yup leeks are a distant mild cousin of onion, garlic, chives & shallots. Are those wild leeks the same thing they call ramps in parts of Appalachia? My sister in law is from West Virginia, she mentioned there's an annual Ramp festival in some part of the state.I'd sure like to try them sometime. My garlic & chives are looking good now,3-4 inches tall already.Even with the coldest January/February here in years they always seem to pop back up every Spring.Winter 2009-10 they were buried under 3 feet of snow for weeks, even with temps down to -20 they are survivors.
