I should count the times I fill the ash hod all winter, out of curiosity. I'll forget by next winter.
I have about a 17 gallon can. Dumped it when it was about 1/2 full, because I thought it would get too heavy to move when full. Then the really brutal weather came, my hands were freezing doing outside chores, and no way I was dumping the can if I didn't have to. So, the can got full, and I started needing ashes on the drive and along the paths where I walk, so I started spreading ash. Am now back to dumping it beside my compost out behind the fence. And am wondering what I am going to do about the full ash can near my kitchen door.... It was great not having to walk 10 feet to dump ash this winter, but now I have to deal with that full can, which is too heavy for me to move. Guess I have to hope for a REALLY still day. What do you do with your ashes? Dump them in one place, spread them out, bury them, put them out with the garbage? After 12 years of burning, the bin I made out of pallets to hold the ash is full to overflowing. I am on limestone, so adding the ash to my garden is not an option. My soil is a perfect PH for growing. Maybe I really am going to have to figure out how to make soap..... Burned about three cords, including uglies, and I am guessing about 35 gallons of ash total....certainly not much more than that.
When Pallet Pete brought a couple barrels of ash here, we just drove back to one of our food plots, laid them on their sides and rolled them. Naturally we had to lift one end a bit as it got toward the end but it worked well. I just told him we wanted to go light so don't dump in one spot. Afterwards I took a gravel shovel and spread the ashes even more. This is how we do it every spring. Well, there was that time it didn't get done until August....
Most of my ashes were spread either on my garden or driveway. It'd be hard to figure out the amount now.
