I scrounged up a small beech (blow down), some red oak (left over from logging 3 yr. ago, sapwood punky but heart solid) and a felled a poplar (about 14" dbh, growing right next to a nice white oak - had to go) and a half dozen pallets. I've got a whole bunch more of the pooplar to buck, just ran out of gas.
"Poop-lar" Its not so bad... I'm burning some right now. Its good for a quick hot fire - which I like this time of year because I'm not burning 24/7. x2 on splitting the small rounds. Even very small pieces never seem to dry out. Once it's split, it will be dry in a matter of weeks - unless it gets wet again. Then it's like a sponge - it will go from crispy dry to sopping wet overnight. So you need to keep it dry for a week or two before you plan to burn it. Anyway nice score! It all burns - get everything you can!
Don't confuse tulip popple with the popple you have here HD. Although it is still a relatively quick drying wood, tulip does take a bit longer.
Mike, it still sometimes amazes me how much alike tulip "pooplar" and white ash look alike and I love that beech and oak!
I split up the beech today, finished up bucking the poplar and got a little more down red oak. I have to say, splitting the beech was not a lot of fun, lots of knots and real stringy. Not like elm, but just enough to be a pain in the rear. Oh well, it's all stacked and drying and will make some nice BTU's.
