I once said I killed a chain every 5 cord. I got pics to prove it now. this probably is not a good thing.. I burn mostly sugar maple. a lot of the old ones are at the edge of fields and farmers let me take them. when leaders break in storms. try to do in fall or winter as, maples especially, moisture seems about half then. plus I am not interfering with the farmers crops which is their money. 2013 fall got 2 tree that cut up to about 11 cord. not hard when trunk start at 42 inch diameter and is about 30 feet long each.

here is pic one this is about 16 inches under bark 20150326_174858.jpg

that is a tap hole real easy to see once split:binoculars:

here is pic two that piece of metal is about an 80 to 100 year old tap. that one I missed with saw. I got bad luck I usually hit with saw and throw away chain for safety 20150326_180832.jpg

seems like I find every piece of steel in a tree barbed wire or rods for fencing etc
guess price you pay for edge of field wood but :hair:

oh and as soon as I get tap out I will return it to farmer. and have a cup with his 93 year young mother:cheers:

Thats the trouble with yard trees and fence line or property line trees. You always get more than you think. Just put on a "landscaping" chain....:D

I cut a large ash tree years ago I hit a clothes line reel 25' up from the ground. Wasted that chain but ended up with 4.5 cords it was worth the cost of a new chain.

Many, many years ago one of the saws found a RR spike in the middle of a tree. I didn't know what I hit but knew is was hard steel because it practically tore the teeth off the chain. Sometime later when the round was split, I discovered the problem.

I cut all my personal wood on the in-laws property, and I have gone through a few chains myself. I think it is because my brother-n-law had a .22 growing up and hit every tree in that woods. I know for certain, you can't walk 10ft with a metal detector without finding a casing!

I have even joked with him about sending him the bill for all the new chains have to buy!
