My first roofing job was my first house...a 1600 sq ft raised ranch with a 4/12 roof. It would have been easy except it already had 3 layers (really?) of shingles on it that obviously had to come off. After that I've roofed numerous jobs for family members. My opinion may be different if I got paid for it, but every job I've done has been for free.

My current house had a hail damaged roof and I collected insurance on it. It actually worked out in my favor to hire the labor, which was fine since it was like 32 square or something between the house, garage, and my shop. That's too much for me to do by myself anyway. This roof should be good for 25-30 years...at which time I'll hire it out again. My family's houses all have new roof so my roofing career may be over.

It's awful nice to have a crew come in with staging, nailers, etc... and do the job in a day or two also... and then, take away the mess. I've done enough hi-rise chit... our old barns were fun... hiring it out... gooder.

The guy who did my roof is somebody I've know for a long time. Nobody can touch his prices and he does EXCELLENT work. He pays his guys by the job and they hustle. When the truck rolled into the drive there was a guy up there shucking shingles in less than a minute. I'm not kidding. They jumped out of the truck, ran to grab the ladder, ran with the ladder to the house, ran up the ladder. No messing around. They tore off and put down 32 square of shingles in 6 hours.

At least there weren't any fire hydrants. A three dog night is a poor night for a fire hydrant.

Edit: the last comment was made by a Radio DJ about the Three Dog Night band many, many years ago.

It's crazy how much of a game changer it was when air nailers appeared. I can actually remember the year I first saw one being used. My honey and I had just gotten married in 1976 and we rented a house in Brewer, Me. The next spring they started a 4 unit apartment unit across the street (looked like a long ranch) and we watched while those guys machine gunned the frame together and then, the shingles. I thought, you know, those might catch on...

Some deer came around later this afternoon so I dropped four tall but very thin Sugar Maples, we had a total of 22 deer eating on all four trees.

No pics = dead batteries from the Lake Placid trip.

Had P/T conferences and had a parent comment that he drove by my pile and didn't know I was in to cutting etc... After talking about his daughter we proceeded to spend about 20 mins telling cutting stories. Another Dad came in and said I can come to his timber anytime (elm, ask, oak) when I call him. Great night!!

Sorry I didn't report earlier. I sawed 3 tanks worth through the ms211c. Then I taped and spackled drywall, and completed the storage area in the bathroom. IMG_20150325_175240391.jpg .

This was almost all Norway pine, but there was some red oak I had to cut up that got wilt in some of the other areas.

Next project here is a proper way to store wood. Maybe a proper wood shed, maybe just a couple 2 pallets together with a roof of some kind. They've been using tarps. Crappy tarps that don't work well.

That little 211 works pretty well, even through the oak. It buzzed right through the pine like gasifer and I down mtn dew! 16" bar, and apparently sharp little chihuahua teeth.

It's nice and light, but my big thumb hit the kill switch like 6 times during that 2 hours of cutting.
