and if she revisits the timberline 13 I bought mine for $600-$800 last summer (I can't remember...but it was on sale). Even a 13 will warm her up and cut electricity bills!!

Yeah, I didn't think about that, you can get close with single wall with a pipe shield attached and they are very cheep compared to using all double wall pipe , I was going to use them , but installed the stove differently

Just for clarity if some do not know it, but the Timber Ridge and SummerHeat stoves are the exact same stoves as the England/Englander stoves and they are made by the same company. They all come in the same model 13 and 30 sizes and they work the same. Some have said otherwise here on this thread, but the 30-NC has a 3.5 cu. ft. firebox. The 13-NC has a 1.8 cu ft firebox. The details are available online here:

    http://www.heatredefined.com/englander/

I looked at the US Stoves when I bought my Englander 30-NC from HD in VA, and I went with the Englander as they were WA state approved and HUD approved. WA state approved stoves are all now EPA-III approved. The US Stoves I looked at were only EPA-II approved and were not approved for HUD (no OAK). I have been burning in my Englander for a full season now and it works fine heating this under-insulated 1300 sq ft mobile home in the Cascade foothills in Oregon. Even at 18 F. outside it was 72 F. inside.

Some ideas for tight spaces, with a double wall flue you can put your Englander closer to the wall. You can save a few inches and the fan that comes with it in back has clearance installed that way (mine does). I do not use the fan as it is too loud and freaks my cat out. I use a quiet box fan at the side of the stove, like I did with my old stove. They still take up space though with the front hearth requirements. That is basically due to the door swing.

Don't believe all the manufacturer marketing regarding firebox sizing.
If I'm willing to stuff my NC30 right up to the tubes, from the rear bricks, all the way to the door, and 100% side to side, w/o any air gaps between splits, the box is still only a little over 3 cu. ft.
Take the bricks out, and now we're talking OVER 3.5 cu. ft., but nobody burns their stove that way. Take out the tubes and baffles, and it gets even bigger, but again............
For me, reality rules, which makes the firebox right about 2.77 cu. ft.
That's the space available for firewood. Measure any firebox and compare to manufacturer claims.
No doubt, it's a big stove though. Caveat emptor.

Hello everyone. Yes, I did get a bit discouraged. However, I do want a stove. I need to make a mock up of a stove and see how it fits. The problem is the floorplan on the house is not the best. I am very limited to where I can place the stove.

Thanks everyone for cheering me up :)

I think you will end up with a great stove be it large medium or small. However you do it you will be warmer and save on the electric bill. Give us some more options to scout for you!

During the interim, get some of the free wood cut and stacked so it can start drying for when you get your stove. The new technology in stoves doesn't do well with anything but very dry wood. Heck, bringing that wood in will give you time to sort out stove ideas :_)

Kimberly, don't get discouraged at all. We're into the 4th quarter of heating season so you have plenty of time to get it figured out before next year.
Your wood should be your priority right now. Get as much as you can split and stacked, it needs time to dry, the more the merrier.
A NC-13 would probably work fine for you as long as you accept the condition of having to reload it more often. I have one I'm finally going to install this summer, and I know I'll be feeding it on a regular basis when I need to. If you have the means, go bigger in stove size but don't sweat it. You can always upgrade in the future.
Flue pipe is the cost killer for me, that stuff is getting pricey these days. Maybe someone here can help direct you towards a good deal?
Let's see a floorplan if you can sketch one out and post it, that will help.
Don't worry about building an adequate hearth, different ways to do them and most fairly inexpensive. Aesthetics will play a role so think about "hearth rise above existing floor". If you like a slightly raised hearth, it will be easy.
    Keep us posted, JB

How long does the HD sale last on the NC30?

Depends on stock. Past seasons in my area, unless you played the on-line zip code game, you could only get store stock at the $649 price. A friend in Vermont was able to order one from their local distribution center for the sale price. I have never seen the end of season price in a flyer with specific dates. Only in store signs or online where they can pull the price as soon as they sell out.

Has anybody been successful with the zip code game this year?

Well, after much searching and looking at stoves and checking dimensions I came to the same conclusion as has been stated here, smaller stoves don't save that much more space and the smaller fireboxes makes the stoves less convenient. Therefore, I went ahead and ordered the NC30 from HD in Durango. Their site listed only three stoves in stock; if the sale is based on stock in the shop, then the sale won't last much longer. Plus, I am tired of worrying over this part of things. I was gifted $1100.00 for getting wood heat installed in my home; now I see that most of that has gone to the stove but I looked all over the net and locally and the NC30 sale was as good as any I saw and better than most. I still need to get the chimney and the hearth constructed. I had intended to build a non-combustible wall facing for the stove as well; and a mantle above to make it look nice and such. I am very low income which is why all of this is difficult for me.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice and encouragement. It really is appreciated.

Things are not so great in Mudville tonight, Kimberly has struck out. :( At least for now. my debit card was declined twice and I guess the bank then locked it out or something. I will have to wait until Monday to find out what happened.
