MrWhoopee This is what I did so I can have one hand free to control the wood .
Just clamp the button down and the motor stays running , if I'm not splitting for 5 min or so , just release it , and the clamp stays put , works great

Mine won't work that way. The ram won't retract until the electricity is shut off. It's funny, to look at them, they are made from the same components and are nearly identical.

something round for the slats, that's 1/2" ground rod I had laying around and welded it to the 1x1 square tubing.
it doesn't need to be tall, just enough to catch the round and spaced so it will cradle them

THAT'S the truth. My daily driver is an 03 S10. It has a 2.2 4 cyl. 5 speed, ext cab, towing package, payload package. It has power steering, power brakes, ac and an f.m. radio. Just the basics. I do not like it.
It has NO style, sits too low, rides like crap, has cab corner rot, the tailgate is gone because SOMEONE got careless backing up while cutting in the woods several years ago.
That said, because of the payload and tow packages, it works like a full sized truck. I've hauled and pulled some incredible loads of wood with it. It is stone cold dependable. I've done very little work to it, and we're pushing 160,000 miles
The best part, it's paid for. I can't logically justify getting rid of it. My best bet, as I see it, is to drive it until one of us dies.

I really like the way you think and think people like you are smart. I bought my son in laws 1997 1/2GMC with extended cab for the $3000.00 they were going to give him on a trade in 10 years ago. Like yours it has some rust but owes me nothing. Has 179,000 miles and doesn't seem to want to quit. My son in law has been through 2 trucks since I bought this one and now bought a Ford Edge. I tried once telling him to buy a beater as he has the knowledge to fix whatever breaks and save the money but it's like telling people who burn green wood, in one ear and out the other with nothing sticking.
