What do you guys think is a fair value of a hard hunted Ruger Carbine in 44mag with a old Lyman Scope. Gun is a 1976 bi-centennial, and its condition is what I would call "A shooter". I gave a good friend of mine, a stihl head, a 064 in sad shape. Now that he has revived it, he is trying to square up with me. He knows that I've been looking for a 44mag for my Daughter for a lil while, and said he is bringing in a ruger on monday for me to check out. Im sure he is going to give me a sweet deal, but was looking for a base range to start with, I looked around on the web and they go for 600-800 in pristine shape. This rifle is NOT in pristine shape he said, "Its been hunted hard, when I got it the stock was hurting so I treated it like a hunting rifle, not a wall hanger" He did mention it shoots well still, groups decent. My little girl is sure to mark up the stock so why start with a mint one when I can save a few hundred with a pre-scratched one. So what say you hunting boys, what would you offer??? Scope is kinda outdated, gun is a '76 but not pristine.
Without pictures it would be hard to say. I would think no more than $350 or so based on what you're saying about it.
Im hopefully going to lay my hands and eyes on it tomorrow. Ill snap a couple pics. Thanks for the reply, I was thinking in the 2-4 range. Cosmetics are secondary to me in a hunting gun for my lil girl, if its accurate is ALL that matters.
I'd pay 4 without seeing it! I would probably go to 5 and at worst plan on a camo paint job for the stock or better yet a camo dip if looks matter to you. Here in Indiana that thing would fetch 700 plus quickly. The 44 mag levers are hard to find since marlin sold out and ppl are hoarding the winchester 94s.
Bocefus78, Ive read on other sites that you boys out in Indy love these and 357 rifles. What gives on your crazy rifle law. These things sell like hot cakes in your state.
Is this the little .44 S/A carbine? Looks like a 10/22 on steroids? These days, I just head to gunbroker.com and deduct 10%. Asking prices are nuts these days , but they are what they are. Beat-up, needs re-blue and a stock re-finish, try $250 and go up from there. Edit- It should be the "Deerslayer" model. If you do get it, ditch the Lyman scope and put a red-dot scope on it with a 2MOA dot. Your daughter will love it.
We can't use a typical hi power rifle with a necked down case. We can only use what they call a pistol cartridge rifle. Some examples of caliber are 357. 44. 500 Smith 454 cassull. 460 Smith. What it comes down to really is ammo is available for the 44 and 357. The others are really tough to find. I know a guy who waited 5 months for 80 rounds of 454 and paid almost 300 bucks! I can walk into wally world and get 50 rounds of 44 for 40 bucks. The new remlins (marlin sold out to Remington) have had qc issues from what I have read so that doesn't help us Hoosier hunters either.
Yeah, 10/22 on serious steroids. He has off all week for hunting. Hopefully next monday I can strike up a deal. I too was hoping the cheaper the better. A red dot, hmmmm
We couldn't come up with a price we could both agree on. Oh well, we'll see what else he throws on the table. Saturday he sent me some pics on my phone of his son holding the saw and the caption read that he hadn't forgot to even the score.
