Found another craigslist gem in nj, only a few miles from my house, the guy has a ton of trees , mostly locust , that have been down for a long time . I was able to get couple small loads outta there. The stuff I took is pretty well seasoned already..
So some good things do come out of Jersey, eh? J/k nice find! Go get some more for those of us still buried with snow. Very cool avatar as well
theres not to much more good bigger stuff there, but tons of little stuff under 6". He has a few that he wants dropped, but I'm nowhere near qualified for dropping trees near houses or fence lines . They happen to be all locust that are straight for the first 30' though.. one is leaning towards his house too.
Nice score! The cl around here now only has some scrounge ash, and not even a 4x8 trailer load, in a very bad neighborhood. Too far away, not enough to bother, and having them watch your back is not worth it. Cl is a crap shoot here, but I'll keep persisting and looking all the the time. One of these days I'll get something of of cl like this.
I know, I seem to get one good one for every 6-7 I contact. This one actually came from the ad that I have up looking for downed hardwood, I think I get more responses from that ad than anything. I'll take whatever I could take. I'm thinking the local tree guys are going to start calling looking to drop wood soon too. My biggest problem is finding a good spot to stack everything on my property..
That's the great thing about locust - it won't begin to rot for 30 years - it's just sitting there seasoning. Cherry heartwood holds up really good too, even in contact with the ground. Nice haul. I have a couple locust groves, but I'm always looking for more... Jersey you say?
Nice, that is my favorite wood to burn. 2 years ago I didn't even know what it was, turns out after ID'ing on here, there is tons of it all around my house. Lots of it was downed in Irene and Sandy, and I've been collecting it all up slowly! Enjoy it!
I find BL seasons fairly quickly. 1 year when green and it's fine. But most of my BL has been laying dead anywhere from 2 years (Sandy), 3 years (Irene), or some 10 year old storm. All but a few pieces of that stuff can be bucked, split (if needed to fit in stove), and burned right away.

You have much better luck than I. My locust takes several years to get below 20% moisture. At a glance it appears dry, but when you split and check it after a year, it's not even close. And that includes a lot of locust that I have gathered that has been down for a few years. Sort of reminds me of what people say about ash. Cut it green, let it dry for a couple of months, then burn it. Nonsense. Ash will dry faster than most hardwoods, but still needs a year or so to season properly.
