Not sure if this belongs in the Sawyer section but whatever! A few pictures of the trim that I've been working on while I'm not running the saws on firewood! All of the wood (so far)has been from one tree that was going to end up at the city dump. My buddy got it in logs to his place had it sawed up on a portable saw mill and turned his garage into a kiln, and then we planed everything down, i then brought it over to my place, got the edges straightened out with the circular saw, cut off the ends, ripped to width jointed down to final width routed what needed to be routed, sanded stained put polyurethane on real thick sanded poly put a second thin coat on cut to final length and nailed it up! Of course easier said than done (also a thousand times faster said than done) here's a couple pics of one window one piece from finished! 20150316_205549.jpg

I will look in the morning and get back to you on that, the stain i know is cabott natural mix,Cajun spice color, problem with the finish is i have 2different finishes. The complete window (the brown colored room) i think is a semi satin, poly urethane, minwax? I do not know because last year i put a lot of trim in, the label came off the finish can :doh:our newly trimmed out Windows started leaking all over or brand new trim :headbang:and we put new Windows in,with new Windows new trim came, along with the headache of trying to remember the steps i took a year before:hair:and realizing i didn't 're label the can that i had used. Long story short one window will be a touch different than the rest but far enough away from the others that it won't be so noticeable to anyone that's not looking for absolute perfection:rofl:
What a mess. But the new finish i like more, is a semi gloss and is actually a hardwood floor finish, should be much more durable. I will get you more details in the a.m.

It looks real good and I like the color a lot. Even the knots are fine and are a reminder that you worked them up yourself.

Thanks too all for the compliments! I love everything about this trim, you would never find this in big box stores, this would all be rejected because of the knots cracks and wicked grain patterns, they only sell strait grained wood.....BORING! And the fact it's not sitting at the city dump routing for the next 60years i think is really cool as well!

Thanks. That is a good product. I've used it many times. I went to the water base about 10 years ago to get away from the fumes of the oil base. It smoothes out and has lasted years with no signs of deterioratio. The best part about the water base is I can apply it over colors. It won't yellow with time. If there is any decorative coloring or stinciling being done, this protects it for many years.

The piece underneath it all? Yes I'm not entirely sure what i will do but probably a piece half the hight of the top big piece, that comes flush with the outside of the two side pieces. (I know that's pretty right terminology but it sounds good in my head)

Absolutely beautiful, shaggy wood dump hoarder!
Hard to believe it was dump bound! Glad you held back from burning it too!

Thank you! Oh it's been tempting to just burn it! But it's actually a lot easier than having everything 45*d. All straight cuts not nearly as much cutting off a few thousandths!

I prefer stuff with some character (knots, cracks, etc). Let's you know its solid wood and not a thin layer of veneer on top of who knows what.

Trim from box stores is sketchier than ever...MDF and styrofoam trim are apparently what is in style.

The magnitude of that work is very impressive. My father was a woodcrafter and I only follow in a nostalgic sense but hold my own. The select lumber I find is pathetic compared to your product and certainly in the mess you have to pick through at the yard. It's nice to see and hear you talk about "character" in wood grain, brings back fond memories. Thank you.

You shared nice thoughts Jim... Your post reminds me of some of my own old memories with my dad(still kickin) and my grandpa(miss him like he just left us yesterday). I too like "character" in wood!
