I start my fires (from cold) Lincoln Log style and even a small fire will get plenty hot.
I was going to cut all my wood to one length but I like the Lincoln Log fire so well I am going to cut two lengths I guess.

Or you could just have a friend that hasn't cut firewood for a while come over and help! That's my method and it seems to work for producing a bunch of random lengths!

I do a Lincoln Log fire but don't fill the stove across the width, just make the fire in the middle , first about 4 ,2 to 2 1/2" kindling E/W , then 2 or3 med to small splits 17" long N/S , then more kindling E/W , last more splits N/S on top, gets hot fast

Yes, you have to learn the stove! That is so true!
