Out to my shed today, 22 degrees out and 27% humidity out according to the weather channel. I know frozen wood doesn't dry so at least I'm making progress!
You are definitely making progress. Rule of thumb is that for every 20 degrees F that the temp goes up the RH gets cut in half. You raised the temp by more than 20 so the RH should be <13% in the shelter. You instead have 62%. That moisture came from somewhere. (And not that frozen wood doesn't dry, it does, but at a much slower rate.).
Crodog, wood will indeed dry in freezing weather. Not as fast as in summer months but it will still dry. If you don't believe this, check with some of those good folks who make Alaska their home. But, it won't dry in that shed! Why? Because of lack of air circulation. This is why most of us will not stack wood inside a shed until it has had time to dry outdoors.
But then he'll lose all the heat. It's a catch 22 I believe. I think the "conventional" wisdom is that as long as the moisture is driven out of the wood under increased temps then the wood reabsorbs it much slower if at all, or something like that. It's the solar kiln principal.
I'm not positive he was, just suggesting that if the goal was to get it above freezing to dry quicker then he lose that gain if he opens it up. I'm not expert but I play one on TV
A few years back I made a shed similar to your's out of black tarps over a 2x4 frame. I put a small attic vent at the top center. When the sun hit it the air would warm up and move up in the stacks. The fins on the attic vent would spin showing some air movement. The moist air would go out the top and cool dry air would be sucked in at the bottom to absorbe more moisture. Does yours have some way of opening a vent near the peak to let some air move? Too big of a vent and the air barely gets warm before it moves out, too small and it stays moist inside. Your thermometer shows you've got the heat part right, now just add a little circulation. KaptJaq
Looks a lot better than what the hell I'm looking at right now Crodog! Did a little plowing again today but gave up.. Pic through the back door as there is kinda a mountain of white stuff keeping us in.
You have a little more snow than we have in the Mid Atlantic, but I think somebody from Boston would laugh if you called that a "mountain of white stuff".
Silly Me! at the back window out the kitchen. Gotta love the mountain/ drifts coming over the house eh Guy. Some of the barbeque is involved also.
Snow is melting, mud is forming! Just went out to my woodshed and its 97 degrees and 25% humidity, certainly drying faster than stacks outside!
