What a day of shopping, now we are thinking about re-arranging the room too so we went and looked at sofas too :)

We are leaning towards the Samsung Smart TV, 40" LCD model 6300. http://www.hhgregg.com/samsung-40-1080p-120hz-led-smart-hdtv/item/UN40F6300
Both Best Buy and HH Gregg sell it but it's cheaper at HH and those guys busted their buts to explain it all, they work on commission, Best Buy doesn't. It was down to a similar LG 42" but the Samsung has a dual processor, the only real difference other brand.

The Samsung is $635 at HH and the wireless air track sound bar is $227 since my current dvd/surround sound is analog not digital and probably won't work. Here's that... http://www.hhgregg.com/samsung-280-...less-subwoofer/item/HWF450#reviewFocusTarget1

    What do ya think?

Both sales reps told us that the old red/white jacks are analog, they have been combined into a single green port now are digital and there isn't a conversion cable. I haven't looked to see what it is but it is about 10 years old.

They are trying to sell you.

The red and white are rca cables ,they are indeed analog but that doesn't matter. No matter what kind of gear you have the sound actually coming out of the speaker is analog, its just a matter of where the digital to analog conversion happened. ( audiophiles might choose analog or digital cables based on which component has a better DAC circuitry, but I'm betting you don't care) If you use rca cables, the DVD player is doing the conversion, if you use digital cables its sending the raw data and the audio amplifier is doing the conversion.

In the old days before flat screens and blue ray if you wanted surround you might have a cable with 5 rca plugs on each end connecting to the surround amp. . one for each sound channel/speaker.

Heck before I got a surround amp I had my DVD hooked up to my TV with HDMI for video only, and used the 'red white' to hook it up to my 1963 vintage vacuum tube stereo for the sound :)

If you can give me the model numbers or take photos (ideally the back showing wiring) of your DVD and audio system we can help you set it up.

Jeremy, are you a member of avs or blu-ray forum? Seems we may know each other in 1 of those forums. ;)

Neither of those. I am a member of Audiokarma but vary rarely post. Also a member of Audio Asylum but havent been active there in years either. Mostly joined for advice when I was first rebuilding my old Mac gear in the late 90s.

SOmebody could start an audio thread in the hobby room and we can compare systems :)

Thanks Jeremy! I can't say I'm a audiophile but appreciate "clean" sound. Granted, growing up surrounded by live music -dad's band and his DJ business, speaker clarity sort of rubbed off. I don't have a trunk full in my car that rattle your fillings out but know a good sub woofer and tweeter when I hear it ;)

Anyway, I'm off for a business trip in the morning but will be home Tuesday night. I have to pull everything out of the "hifi" cabinet Wednesday to try and figure out how we want to install this sucker. I appreciate the help, I'll post some photos when I get back. Neither place recommended mounting in my field stone walls as even with a full range motion bracket to account for the uneven rock surface, they 1 - wanted to charge $350 for the install (both best buy and HH) and neither would guarantee the install as they can't be responsible for "non-standard" installs.
I went to Lowes to see how much a drill bit would be and the manager told me that I'd probably break the bits trying to get the holes drilled since they need water or a "special drill" but they don't rent them. I am going to give a ring to the contractor that did our Sandy repairs as he has both masons and carpenters on his crews that know our house and can make sone recommendations too.

We looked at floor stands and ceilings brackets but think we may just use a piece if furniture, like a primitive skinny cabinet or side board as alot of the "media centers" are huge, I've only got about 48" to work with. There are tons of antique stores around here, sure I could find a small cabinet.

I never thought this would turn into such a project!

Up at 430 with sick toddlers again, see if I can think straight.........

The 'special drill' is a hammer drill and masonry bits. If Lowes doesn't I would think HD rents them. The next question is what anchors to use, for concrete there are special screws called tapcons, I honestly don't know what to use in stone. This is one I'd want pro advice for, not to ruin those walls. I bet Scotty would know something.

Two ways to approach the stone. 1- Mount the wall bracket diret to the stone. Have washers handy to fill in empty space that may result from low points in the surface. You will need to have holes drilled precisely where the bracket dictates. Thus the stones will have holes in them. 2- Mount a 1 inch or so wood base in which the bracket would be attached to. You can then pick custom mount ponts between the wood and the stone surface. If there are wide mortar joints, you can locate the anchors in the mortar, making patching very easy if you ever remove the tv. I would not use Tapcon screws for this task. If drilling direct into the stone, plastic inserts should work well, just use large enough inserts to accept the screws provided by the bracket manufacturer. If in the mortar, it would depend on the condition/size of the mortar joint. If in good condition the plastic inserts should do well. If the mortar is shakey, you may want lead shields that are large enough to fill the gap between the stones. Happy to help you with the masonry drilling too. Like I pm'd you, been close of recent and still at that site. Plenty of masonry bits and specialty drills, and a bit of experience:rolleyes:

Hubby came home with a cabinet. I'm not home to see it but he's pretty good at knowing what I like and picking out stuff. I will see it when I get home, fingers crossed it's as nice as he says.

Thanks for the offer myway. If this cabinet isn't what I had in mind, I'll let you know. My contractor left me a message and said the same thing you did, his reservation is the hammer drill may crack the stone since while the mortar has been re-done over the years, it's still the original 1860’s stone and may chip and crack instead of creating a hole. I'm up for a second opinion so I'll keep you posted, especially since you are working right up the street from me, perfect timing ;)

I'm flying home tomorrow, have my fill of Detroit for now, well until next month anyway. Stuffed with Crawfish and half lit from drinkin' with the guys at Fish Bones. I love business trips, even in Detroit we have fun ;)

Glad you're still kickin if up there. I bypassed that place a month or so back enroute to Southfield for college visits. We were supposed to visit in the heart of Detroit, but opted out with the crime issues. Safe trip. BTW, we dodged all the tornados today!

I stay at the Greektown Casino Hotel and walk to the RenCen so I'm in a pretty "nice" area. I've been coming out here almost every month going on 4 years and have been more fearful walking around in Trenton or Philly than I've ever been in Detroit. I do wander out through the suburbs but make sure I take someone with me, especially when I go out to Detroit Pawn, from the show, that's always an adventure ;)

Glad to hear the storms passed, my flight was delayed an hour because of wind so I left worried!

Just peeked at the site and the only close option is the UN40F6300AF. Think the AF suffix indicates wifi? That unit is 700 via this source. Might be able to drop ship and save you sales tx.

Jenni, one thing that I think you may have dodged but for anybody else reading the thread:

LED backlit screens come in two varieties: Edge Lit and Direct Lit

Edge Lit is similar to the older neon/flourescent backlights that were located along the edge of the screen and used mirrors to reflect the light through the LCD display itself. This type of back lighting is common in the lower priced units still as it is cheaper to use less LEDs to light the screen from the edge.

Direct backlighting is exactly what it sounds like. Multiple LEDs arranged in a grid pattern directly behind the LCD display.

What's the big deal? Direct lit screens achieve much better black/white contrast, especially noticeable watching night scenes in a movie for example, in a dark room. Edge Lit screens can wind up with a very noticeable halo effect around bright objects on a dark screen, ie. a moon against a dark night sky.

I just bought a Vizio E-Series 42" Smart TV about 2 weeks ago. Sams Club had one for $20 less than Wal-Mart. The model numbers were almost identical save for one letter on the end. The only difference was the backlighting, theWal-Mart one was Direct Lit vs the Edge Lit one in Sams. I splurged the $20... :D

Also after I got it all setup with far fewer cables, god bless whoever came up with HDMI (1 cable to connect devices, no separate audio/video cables!), I noticed a new icon on my phone while watching a YouTube video. Curious being that I am, I tapped, and the video I was watching was now playing on my Smart TV. Totally Bad azz!

Another option for places to buy TV's at, is Costco. They have a 2 year warranty on all TV's and for a small fee (in my case $29 for a 42" LG TV) an extended warranty for a total of 5 years. The warranty place Costco uses is fairly well rated.

I have one big Sony, but the other three are Visio, we really like the detail and color of the Visio sets. Would recommend them to anyone. Good price, dependable, light weight.

You can get a 55" LED smart t.v. With 1080p and 240hz for $999 at best buy. I'm trying to talk the wife into it.
