howdy y'all! I'm new to the forum, and to burning (just had a NEO 1.6 installed), and to chainsaws! Yay! I got (I think) a pretty good deal on an old 500vl, post-recall sn that starts up with 2-3 pulls. I paid $70 but it has no chain brake. Does anyone know where one could be located? It seems like as I've looked around, it's pretty rare... Am I just SOL? Anyway, I'm looking forward to giving the saw and myself a good workout out on my sister's property this weekend, just waiting for my PPE to get here (Amazon). I have some more cleaning to do on the saw and I'll post some pics after its all cleaned up.

Yup, welcome to FHC Polvalt . From what you have said, your new to the wood burning experience, glad to have you. What kind of winter temps do you get in Washington? And what kinds of woods will you get to cut at your sisters? Nice looking saw, pics in the field would be great, folks here love pics
i picked up the same model about a month ago for a whole $10. bucks, needed little to get it going again, by no means is it perfect, but will be a good firewood saw as is, mine runs darn good, this is the only 50cc saw i've ever seen that lists in it's sales brochure that a 24" bar being an option for it, as far as chain brake parts, it would be better to locate a parts saw that has all the needed parts, as these saws were available with or without a chain brake, it was an option, here's a pic of mine.............
That's a pretty good looking saw for $10... Almost makes me feel like I got ripped off... I guess I'll be on the lookout for a parts saw! Anyway, here in Washington, we have had a very mild winter. Coldest week of the year dipped into the high teens (for the high), single digits for the lows but we are looking at 50's in the daytime right now and just below freezing at night.
yeah, the 500 looked pretty ugly when i got it, but it cleaned up well, as far as the weather around here (and many other places), there's only one way to describe it............
LOL! I've only been up here a couple years but the old timers keep telling me about winters where it didn't get above zero for weeks on end with snow drifts to to the top of second story homes. As for now, the whole global warming thing seems to be working out well... On another note, there is not a lot of variety of trees out at my sister's place, mostly Ponderosa Pine, but 10 acres of it. They have a couple douglas fir trees in the front though that will be coming down soon (they're having a tree service take them down because they are fairly close to the house and leaning toward the house) and they said i could take anything i want. In fact, they probably wouldn't mind if i took almost every tree of the property...
BTW, i would have paid $70. in a heartbeat for the one you got, i still feel these were some of the best saws ever made, i just stole a j/d version off ebay, a model 45ev, same as a 400evl echo version, for $80. shipped, it just showed up mid day today, was listed as it would start with fuel mix down the carb and not stay running, i put fresh fuel mix in it, purged the carb, it started and with some adjustment was running great, it was otherwise in pretty nice shape, i'll get some pics of it tomorrow.............
Welcome to FHC! The 500 is a special saw. Glad you checked the serial #. Because if it was pre recall? You could get a new saw in return for that old 500. There was one recently on CL. But a little farther than I wanted to travel.
Yeah, when the seller listed it on Craigslist, I started trying to find info on it... Saw the recall threads and crossed my fingers. Turns out the first thing I checked was the serial number. I was a bit disappointed that it was too new for the recall, but it started easy and cut well and was surprisingly comfortable to handle (I know that there are a ton of saws out there that are lighter and better balanced, etc. but I'll pick up those ones later when I really have the bug). While it was pretty dirty, the chain was sharp and the price was right.
the 500 in question regarding the recall also has two features that can ID it without looking at the serial number, though it would still be need to be checked, the early version 500 had push button air filter cover lock down button, it also had a full loop top/main handle, it did not have the small "arm" to hold the upper right handle mount, looked kinda like a stihl 031 handle only smaller diameter , i have a sales brochure that shows this early version............also wanted to add, that the j/d saw i just bought turns out to be the same as a 440evl, not the 400, the clutch cover decal was missing when i bought it, and the numbering used on the tag can be confusing if your not used to the j/d numbering system..........
