So, just had and insurance inspection done today, last one was when we bought the place 4 years ago. Everything was going good, checked utilities out, everything A-Okay there... dogs, took a pic of them... then asked about any wood burning devices.. Yep, got one... ohhhhhh....so I show it to her, and had the instillation certificate handy, explained the installation of an insert to a old fire place... yep new flue sized to the fire box, 38' 6" long, and fully insulated. Also told her the necessary clearances required by the manufacture, and proved I meet or exceeded all clearances.. Then she asked, and said everyone says no so it's no big deal... do you have it inspected... yep I do yearly, and handed her inspection certificates from the installer, and from the local fire department (that I happen to be chief of) She was shocked, says hardly anyone has them inspected... I was shocked... I do a bunch for the fire department every year... cuts down on my stress level as chief, and a service to our community... a free service. She had never heard of a FD doing an inspection, and says normally people do not have there wood burners inspected, from her experience. So I guess my thought for the day, talk to your local FD, they also may provide such inspections, may not be free, but could help with keeping the insurance company happy, happy, happy!
Had our Ins. Co. out back in 2010, when we switched companies. Local place, and the guy didn't even care about some of the info. I was trying to give him about the install. Previous owners (or prior to them, maybe) had a stove with a 6" collar going into a 6-8" increaser right at the stove, then everything was 8" out through the roof....straight up. I'm thinking there was an older stove here that had an 8" collar. Anyway, over the course of a couple years, starting with the stove pipe, I made it right. There was no adapter at the ceiling support box, and no attic insulation shield in the attic before I started. I probably know more about how to do a proper and correct install than most installers in the area. I'm in the attic on a regular basis, and on the roof to clean at least a couple times too. I've got it all covered except for a fancy schmancy certificate. No offense to the good and certified installers out there, but I wouldn't trust one up here to tell me what day it is, let alone inspect my stuff. Sorry for the sorta' rant. Dogs sometimes bite people, who then sue. Oh, and our previous Ins. Co. told me I needed to put the LAWN CHAIRS away that were in the yard........on the lawn. Still haven't figured out that one, which is why they're our previous Ins. Co..
To have proof of breed, and photo proof of your dog's in case of someone being attacked in your neighborhood... kinda a doggy mug shot to identify attacker. Lol
Act of nature. I can go round and round with my Insurance lady... OK whooooo there Nathan... no need to go off on a rant... ok... I think we are safe. Inspection lady did have a funny look on her face when she saw a few of my chainsaws in the basement!
Nah, it just didn't quite fit with a certain expectation. There were a few other things in the yard that I believe they thought shouldn't be there. I had two old sliding doors behind a shed propped against a tree that were left by the previous owners. I plan to maybe use them on top of cold frames. Nope, shouldn't be there. What if someone comes on the property and trips over those? Anybody that's that far back on my property is very plainly trespassing and looking for something other than me. Nothing here is unsafe for those I invite to be here. damm the Ins. Co. Sorry for another rant.
What's an insurance inspection? Had a guy stop by last summer from the ins. co. that took pics of the outside of the house, I guess that was my insurance inspection. Wife wants to shop around for lower rates and now I'm not sure that's such a good idea.
Never had one either, not even pics.... 2.5 homes since 1991. I did that happily with auto insurance, not willing to mess with home insurance. Also, we added an 1800 sq ft addition in 1998, the county did not show up until almost 10 years later, we did not owe back taxes either
I've always had property inspections from my insurance company. I welcome the inspections, I know everything on our house and properties is on the up and up. Also got a rate drop, cause I tore down some un-used buildings, and filled in some dry wells. Same carrier covers all my company insurances. Just had our rep at the office yesterday going over our company policies... dad thought the rep brought the bible with him, nope just our stack of policy papers Inspection lady said she gets house pics even if no inspection is done, just stops by. Our tax assessor is out yearly, I think it is that way state wide in Iowa, must be done in July, cause most farmers want me to build new buildings after August, so miss out on tax hike for a year.
Lady was also a dog lover... she has 4 dogs in the house... the "puppy" is an 11 month old Great Dane... ha and she think my Lab was big... ok he is a little over weight.
I've only owned a home for 3 years, but about 6 months after I bought it the insurance inspector stopped by at random, and then called my cell to see if I was home (I wasn't). He said he took a few pictures of the outside, and told me I needed to drop a tree limb that was too close to the chimney (which was already on my "to do" list) and that was it. He never mentioned coming inside or seeing my stove.
Funnier still, was that a couple were right around the fire pit. Maybe if they had come by when we were sitting in them (in the snow), they wouldn't have been so confuzzled by their presence. I don't know. There's a place north of me that has an "association" and some of the rules there would make me loony. Can only plant certain types of bushes, and they can't be over there, you need to put them where we want. I suppose that works for some people, but not I. Sorry Farmhand, I feel I've jacked your thread, but this gets me a wee bit riled.
No harm Papadave... a good never hurt my feelings... I'm with you on "associations"... them Yuppies can keep them, I run into them now and then building retail buildings.... give people a hint of any power and it goes to there heads.
