    My dad gave me a new chain and i was wondering how to figure out what size pitch an gauge. I got the booklet with it but it does not say what size it is.

    Measure the distance on 3 rivets center-to-center and divide by two...I think. Somebody will confirm. Or just try it on the spur or rim of known pitch that you have.

    The 3 on the cutter denotes that its 3/8 or .375
    Looks like full chisel by the square outside side to top corner
    Looks like 1 tie strap between cutters, so its not semi skip and not full skip
    Only question is what is the drive tang thickness ?
    If you flip the chain over to the other side and look at the driver ..............
    3 = .050
    5= .058
    6= .063

    So you have 3/8 RS ............. need a drive link count for length, and the number on the other side of the driver for what thickness the bar will need to be

    Great information. I didn't know what those numbers and letters meant on these chains.

    OK, so 71 DL's on 3/8 RS @ .050 .................

    A 72 DL is for a 20" bar

    I count much more accurately if my socks and shoes are removed beforehand.

    Not too sure about that, unfortunately my memory isnt doing well in my later years, but I dont ever remember spinning an odd DL chain in 3/8's, other than 91 and 105.

    Again, I am smart enough to know that I am too dumb to remember ....................
