never done any cable rigging always bucked it up on the hill and rolled it down, with a few exceptions of the tree being close enough to the road that I could yank it out with a half ton pick up

Can rigging be easily done for going up hill? I like the zip line for logs idea. Just thinking for going against gravity.

yes, to my knowledge that is usually referred to as yarding. Think Axe Men on the history channel. I am going to be working a small area this summer that will require a yarding setup of sorts. I plan to take lots of pictures.

Let me know if you are interested in pursuing this idea. I will be down in the Timber Coulee area in mid June. I could bring you a roll of cable and show you how to do eye splices in the field.

I'll look up "yarding". The tree service cut down and bucked a big oak into rounds. They are big and heavy, and down a hill. Its only like 50ft, but lifting and carrying 100 lb+ rounds up a 15 degree hill is a pita. Gotta be an easier way.

These things come in 2 sizes. We got the large ones and it is amazing how much easier it is getting wood out with them and also saves a lot of bending, which my back appreciates. Many times I'll cut where I can't get the trailer to without lots of work cutting brush and prickly ash, so I'll usually cut into 4' or 8' lengths, depending upon the size of the tree. Then using just one pair of the log tongs, I sort of lift the end and then just walk out dragging the log behind me. It really works great and saves a ton of work.
