the eggs you buy in the store with no spot of life in them are un-natural but it's what people want

Why does a woman produce an egg every month if she isn't going to have a baby?

We have 15 hens. This winter and last they decided they were going to start laying in January. I have no idea why. In the past, winters have always been a drought. We've never heated or lit the coop. This is just from the last couple days. I haven't boxed these yet. There's another 6 dozen boxed and we've sold 8-10 dozen already.

LOL! PM sent! I need pictures!!! :D

Yea, but that is different. They don't actually lay an egg that is 1/10th or so of their body weight! Seems like a lot of energy spent on these useless eggs! Nature normally took care of this kind of thing, seems like chickens got screwed in evolution! ;)

Just did some math, the average chicken weighs about 8 lbs, the average egg is 2 ounces (would have thought more?). Anyway, that is more like 1/64th of their weight. 8x16 = 128 oz (chicken) VS 2 oz (egg). I guess eggs are lighter than they look~!

The egg production rate is dependent on the level of protein in their diet.

Only when there's a heavy rain. That ditch used to be a mess. The catch basin was filled in with silt and water would back up over there. Last summer I dug it out and made a new basin and dug up 60 foot of rusted out drain pipe, replacing it with 12" ADS pipe. Have another 40 ft of it to do this summer. Most of those rocks came out of what I dug up, er excavated with the spud bar.

our kids who live buy us get eggs for free. we take a 2 dollar a dozen donation when we have people who want our eggs. 26 hens middle of winter getting 12-18 eggs a day. might be breaking even on food. labor is free.

Useless? Are you crazy? Did you ever hear Bubba Gump talk about shrimp? Well same goes for eggs. You can have egg salad, egg sandwich, hard boiled egg, poached egg, eggs over easy, on and on and on. lol chickens are doing exactly what their supposed to do. Lay eggs, get battered and fried or made into soup.
I tell our girls all the time. It's eggs or soup and it's up to you.

We don't sell eggs. Extra eggs are given away. A $13 bag of feed lasts about a month and they get all of our scraps. It would be cheaper to buy store eggs, but we like having our own eggs and they're better than store eggs. For some reason they've been laying frozen eggs for the past week or so, must be eating too much snow.
