I was off today for Presidents Day. It was -11 degrees here this morning, but I wasn't going to waste a day off sitting inside simply cause it's cold out. So I cut, split and stacked about a 1/2 cord of some cherry logs I've had since before Christmas. And it felt good! I actually worked up a bit of sweat swinging the splitting maul. Here is a picture about halfway done today. The temp rose to about -1 by the time I got finished. Take that winter!!
Ah Drasco, I remember days like that and I too enjoyed splitting then so understand what you mean. Glad you got it done but hang on, there is one more really cold shot coming our way later this week. Hopefully after that this weather will break. It is time we start getting up around 32 degrees.
I agree Dennis, we should easily be consistently in the mid 30's by this time of year. One more cold shot. We're ready. Are you close to Warren, MI?
Been showing Mother Nature who's boss a lot this winter, she's not getting the message! I think this is one of those winters the old timers are always telling stories about. At least now I'll have some stories to tell the grand kids, and I won't be lying.
I'm gonna show mother nature who's boss by raking snow off a couple roofs. While it is snowing apparently.
I certainly was fooled by winter this year. Hardly even a trace of snow all season, up until the week of New Years. And now she just keeps kicking our guts in..... But latest PITA at my house isn't the snow, it's the two inches of solid ice that occurred during a mild day with rain last week. Deck, sidewalk going around the one side of the house and driveway are solid ice.
Yes it is. And the kicker is that cinders and salt won't even touch the stuff. It's top damm cold for that stuff to even put a dent in it. I know quite a few people who are ready to kill a certain "groundhog".......I love winter but even I have my limits.
We had the same weather here that week. Mild temps, then rain (on top of slushy snow), then deep freeze. And solid ice. Your right, salt won't even touch it. I was able to scrape most of the drive with the tractor bucket peeling up the ice in big chunks. The sidewalks were another story. Sheesh!
Glad to see others that share the same mindset I do. It's only winter, not the end of the world. It's not the first winter, nor the last.... not the worst, or the mildest. Positive attitude will get you through anything.... me I know I'll be dreaming of these days come July when it 100° and 99% humidity and I'm stacking square bales in the loft.... I thought ol Phil the ground hog said 12 more weeks.... JK ~Nathan
Was out today for a few hours, walking the dog, dealing with the compost pile, dumping ashes, bringing in firewood, shoveling access to the next cord, etc....had to come in to meet other obligation, but didn't want to. I was amazed at how mild it was, my hands weren't even cold. Figured it was about 26 -28 F, much warmer than predicted. Checked the temp when I came in - it was 3F! Absence of wind makes a huge difference. Makes me realize how bitterly cold it has been, and worry that I may be getting acclimatized to the cold and find the summer hot....
You are right about the wind. I know that I can handle much colder temperatures when there's little or no wind. Last Saturday was in the teens with 40 MPH winds. Brutal. Sunday was below zero, but no wind. I was out there both days, but I can tell you, Sunday was much more comfortable. As far as the heat goes, I think you"ll be fine. The warm up to summer is a gradual one, and there'll be plenty of time to adjust.
Got two roofs raked(south and E/W sides) Two driveways removed the 3 to 5 we got today. Been a while since I've used high speed on the blower. Been at it since 3 and it is 8 now. This is it for this Winter, right ?
When it comes to weather, no matter how hot or cold, wet or dry, sunny or cloudy, snowy or rainy or windy or calm it was. In the end all you got was the average.
Long ways down to Warren. Picture Flint and we are north and mostly west of there. A bit over 50 miles from Flint. We're not far north off M-57.
That's cool Dascro (pun intended). Did ya notice how much easier the rounds pop apart when they're freeze-dried solid like that? The ice inside must keep the fibers from binding, or somesuch. Splittin' sure goes easier for me in temps that cold...
I did notice that the splitting was easier in that cold temperature, Gark. They almost blew apart on impact. Thanks Dennis. The reason I asked if you were located near Warren is I frequently traveled there for work several years ago. I got very familiar with that whole area.
We've gone through that area a few times but we normally will go out of our way to miss the cities. Also, we do not go in that direction very often.
It is amazing how warm 15 degrees can feel after you get used to the cold weather. It was 15 below here yesterday morning. Burning a lot of wood right now.....and like many of you, ready to see the thermometer get above freezing.
