I was warned about CAD many times... thought oh it will never happen to me. My father in law had given me two Poland saws and a non running Stihl 028, and he has a fleet of Stihl 044 and bigger saws. I figured I wouldn't need much more the I had... so naive. I found another firewood themed forum three years ago when looking for info on my wood burning insert. (Nothing near as cool as FHC) First heard of CAD at that point. But I wasn't taking fire wood seriously at that point. Then this fall my wife decided we needed to burn more wood, and I decided to clean out fence rows to build new fence around the pasture. Realized fast the Polands where not up to par. Took the 028 to my buddy/neighbor that is a small engine wiz and Echo dealer. The 028 looked to need more work the I wanted to mess with at the time, so I started looking for saws. I picked up my first Stihl back in October off Craigslist, a 017/MS170 Frankensaw, a 017 chassis, 170 engine, after market fully adjustable carb and a muffler mod. Turned out the little beast had a mini build thread over on AS. Started reading more on saws there, I knew I needed a "little bigger saw" so I started pouring over Craigslist for a 60-70 cc saw. Missed out on a cherry 038 Mag 2 for cheap, then I was obsessed with finding a saw. By Christmas I decided heck with used I'm buying a new saw, was planning on MS391, but read so much good stuff about the M-tronics I decided to save a little more and get a MS362CM. Then around new years MS362R-CM popped up for sale on AS, was halfway local, so struck a deal to meet up. At this point I found FHC..... wood hoarders? Reallly? So I got involved posting here, and have learned a ton. I've been really happy with the two running Stihls I've got, and fell in love with M-tronics. So a little voice in my head started chanting "new saw, new saw, new saw" and after reading all the great things about the MS241CM & MS261CM... and then I made the mistake checking AS's classifieds... yep a 241 a few weeks old and only 3 tanks through it.... for less then my local dealers MSRP. Yeah there is another saw on it's way to me I gotta tell ya something.... I got a fever... and the only prescription is more chainsaws! I'm gonna start wearing a face mask when I come here... don't want to catch the modded saw bug as well.... now tell me again how awesome is a ported saw? ~Nathan
Welcome home Nate...we've been waiting for you.... PS its all good here...we all think its normal to ogle another mans saw...its normal to obsess over your firewood stacks and to treat your wood like wine...aging and storing and species selections... all normal here.
of each class that is....(don't be scaring the new guy into one of them silly 2-3 saw plan mumbo jumbo ideas---let him spread his wings and buy buy buy !!!) saws are your Friends !!!!
Then once you have a few saws, you need a variety of bars and chains for each. Then once you have a variety of bars and chains, you need more saws so that you don't have to "waste time" switching bars and chains around. Then once you have a variety of bars, chains, and saws, you can send some out for porting and mod work. Then you get committed.
CAD isn't so bad. You could be collecting a lot less useful things! You're off to a healthy start. Let us know what you think about the 241. I was eyeing that one but couldn't pull the trigger.
How are you planning to haul that wood out? ATV, trailer, tractor????? With all those saws, you will be in the three year plan for sure.
The 241 is one of my favorite saws. Good little runners they are, right outta the box. Great handling saws too. That's one that took me by surprise. I had to look down and make sure it wasn't all orange.
Yes, yes... your just starting...Great adventure story . Congrats on all those wonderful those saws...
There ya go ....each one needs a "bucket saw" something like an ms 180 or 250...something that rides around in the bucket looking for something to chop up !!!!
Beautiful story!! It is hard to stop once one is ported. I held off for a few years. But I only had my first ported saw over a year ago... I have since had numerous (many I don't own now.. 362C-M, 441C-M, 036 Pro, 395xp, etc). They all ran good stock.... But....
I think I know that 362R-CM, you speak of having!! You buy that from Justin? you gotta watch out for CAD!! I had never even heard of it, then all of a sudden, I knew there was something wrong!! Last fall I wanted a 241 real bad, so I went the dealer and bought one,, that high lasted a few days, then I was looking for something else (next saw) I came across a sweet deal on a used 241. less then two weeks after I bought the new one, I told myself, I dont NEED it,, as I have the new one, some inner voice told me to BUY IT,,, but I told myself I didn't NEED it,,, but for some reason I could not say NO, and I bought it anyways,,, I woke up a few days later, said to myself WTH, I have two 241's now,, that lasted a few days,,, then I was on the search for another saw,, damm this CAD, is a hungry animal!! Sadly, I dont have either of my 241's anymore, CAD is ALWAYS hungry and wants MORE,,, so just do yourself a favor and feed it as MUCH as it wants because you cant stop it
Maulhead: Yeah you know this saw, I got it from Justin. I flipping love this saw! I doubt I'll ever double up in saws, unless I stash one away if they discontinue a model I like, or one ported and one stalker. But I can't see the point in that either. I know, I know... listen to this newb, thinks he won't have two of the same model.... pishh give it a year!
