It's a lot warmer today than yesterday but with the stiff wind, it is cold. I was talking to my son just a bit ago and he is planning a trip here. I told him to be sure he brought his long johns. He said he has to wear them in his office! No doubt he keeps his home a bit warmer than that. But I've talked to a lot of people this week and without fail they are all complaining that it is cold outside and inside. Not a problem for us!

Yesterday we had to head to the city again. I got up at 6:00 and there was a big coal bed in the stove. Opened the draft fully and sort of raked coals, or some of them forward then had breakfast. Then I had to load the stove so we could get going. After I loaded it I thought to look at the indoor temperature and it was 78 degrees. Nice to wake up to!

When we left, the outdoor temperature was at -9. When we finished in the city and started home I noticed it was 10, which means the temperature rose 19 degrees in about 5 hours.

We got home and after changing clothing, I loaded up the porch wood rack (wife helped on the last load) to get through this cold weekend. Had to put a new light in the well pit. Then came inside and that is where we'll stay the rest of the day and maybe the next 3 days. When it gets the high temperature around zero, it is just right for staying inside by the stove.

Betcha all those suckers complaining about "wood smoke" are gonna be wishing they were feeling the heat like we are :coldfire::campfire::fire::MM: . Especially when they have to keep turning up their t-stat's!

Wife and I went to Gaylord today Dennis, and left the house nice and warm. SIL stayed with their dad while we were gone and I told her to add a couple pieces of wood if things started cooling down.
Well, we got home about 6 hours later and she had followed my advise. There were 2 splits in the stove, the air was still way down where I left it, and there was virtually no flame in the stove. The 2 splits were putting out quite a nice plume of smoke from the stack.
    Jeesh.
    Excited to see your boy?
We're in for some more cold, so your idea to stay in is a good one.

I think someone on here has something to the effect of needing another log on the fire for said cause.

It's 11 here now and going to 4. Local weather has it at feels like -7. Not sure I buy that, but it's cold. Wood stove has a mix of splits and Redstone Fuel bricks. Family room where the wood stove is located is a toasty 78. The main house which is oil heat is 64, and the furnace keeps coming on to keep up with the falling temps. Can't wait to get a wood stove or a pellet stove in the main part of the house.

it is -1 here now and going down into the minus teens tonight. Wife and I are parked in the family room with the Harman stove. That really cranks out the heat. Anyone visiting says it is too hot in here. Wife likes it about 80 F. I would prefer it cooler but she makes so much noise it isn't worth trying to win this one.
The cold is so intense that our labs go out only long enough to do their business then bark loudly to come back in. Tomorrow another blizzard with Siberian air.

I agree with you Dennis, having your home at 75 +/- deg is nice and comfortable and for a wood burner it is no doubt peace of mind at work. Anyone else who is heating their home with gas or oil is probably heating it at no more than 68 degrees and with the cold we are experiencing now, they have little peace of mind when it comes to what they are spending. Great thread

My boss lives in MA and has been filling his 200 gallon oil tank every 2-3 weeks. I can't imagine doing that...does not compute.

Dave, I just looked it up and Atlanta is at -3 right now. Same for Gaylord.

Sounds like she did what you told her to do. Maybe the next time you should explain the draft and how it works. :heidi:

    Yep, she did.
Educated, but not always very smart.
She has a fireplace at her house, and plans to put in a stove at some point. That should be interesting.

And oh boy, the cold comes in right behind the wind. It kept falling all day yesterday but then overnight it got really cold. Not even up to zero today.

If I still had the oil hooked up and didn't have wood that's about what I would use in three weeks. I can't imagine throwing all that money away.
We both like it 75 to 80 during the winter and the daughter whines that it's too hot.
I tell her to go outside if she wants to cool off.
