Great article. But no doubt they were looking only at large cities because they sure miss a lot. Just think about places like in Washington state of California or anywhere in the mountains. But one can even look at more flat land and make this article look stupid.

    Snow in US.jpg
I remember when we lived at Gaylord, MI and used to always hear about all the snow in Buffalo, NY. We laughed because we always got more than Buffalo. In fact, the lowest snowfall for a season when we lived there was 201". I think the highest was between 220-230 but don't remember for sure. Let's just say it was a lot. The graph below is up to date as of this morning.

And if you really want to get serious about snow in MI, one need not look farther than Copper Harbor, or Houghton or Ironwood. Here is Copper Harbor at 204" so far this season. Sort of makes that little 90" sound pretty light.

my previous zip code included elevations from 5000ft to over 8000ft. the records were quite misleading for my area at 5600'

I can well imagine. There can be a tremendous difference in elevations. It's sort of like in the fall watching the snow level start at the top and slowly (sometimes) get lower and lower.

I take headlines with a grain of salt.

On another note my son lives just outside of Boston in Somerville. From what they tell me it's a real mess right now. And to top it off my daughter in law is due around the 23rd with my first grandbaby. I hope it clears up!

I just don't worry bout it in the winter but I do like Worchester in my bloody Mary's. Come spring the snow will be gone and it will all just be a faded memory till next year. Maybe.

I've seen where global warming is causing the gravitational pull to change, making Iceland rise and causing volcanic activity amongst other things. When I see these headlines I forward them to my wife and chance sleeping alone :)

I just did a google search "global warming" and started adding random words after warming. So far there is a article on everything I can think of.

Oh stop. This board is supposed to be a politics free zone.

If you want to start down that road than Ill start to link to all the research articles correlating increased energy in the atmosphere to greater extreme swings in weather patterns causing these exact record events we complain about.

    Lets just let it be.

I googled it and all of these rankings seem to limit the criteria to cities of 100,000 population or more, which would explain why these small towns you mentioned are missed.

winter forgot to show up this year in Washington State, Our mountain snow pack is way below norm and the ski resorts are barely even operating if at all. Already threats of higher water rates this summer due to low snow pack

Hehehe... Climate Change/Global Warming... here we go. If this subject really is all about science, than politics has nothing to do with it. Right? We've been told, for 2 decades now, that man's presence on this earth is the biggest driver of weather/climate vs all other possibilities and that it's causing the earth to warm. The debate is over. It's settled... only... it's not. Apparently. Those computer models? The ones that have created this GW industry? If the science is really settled... how come those computer models keep being revised? If the science was settled, there'd be no need to "tweak" those computer models, like over 3 times... 10 times, etc. One grand report/prediction followed by actual resulting data should be all that's needed. Right?

Man's arrogance in all things "big" seems to be endless sometimes. God help us if actual weather manipulation becomes possible on a super large scale. Can you imagine being able to cool things down... now? The world's most powerful computers can't predict what the weather will do long term. But, unless all history started this morning... man has a long history of underestimating this earth's ability to step on us like a bug. We should go forward using extreme caution...

    Rant over.

If the computers cannot predict next week's snowstorm with much accuracy how can they predict what's going to happen in the next ten years?

You are missing the most basic point of science. There is no such thing of absolute proof in science. We make hypotheses, which are proposed explanations for an observed phenomena based on the best information we have. We are always learning more and thus many hypotheses continually evolve.

Every scientific hypothesis subject to change when we learn new info. You know that some basic elements of Einsteins theory of relativity have come into question as we learn more about the every basics of the universe with research into things like string theory, multi universes, etc. The cause of the extinction of dinosaurs by the great Yukatan asteroid has been challenged by newer data. Medical science has long since realized that bleeding people with leaches doesn't cure disease. These revision to previously accepted "truths" happen all the time.

Saying that we should just give up on a theory because we didn't get it 100% exactly perfect the first time is a cop-out tactic of the anti-progress crowd. If humanity treated every challenge like that through history we would still be living in caves banging two rocks together trying to discover fire.

Today, the majority of researches in the field of climate science believe based on the best evidence so far that the climate is changing faster than any time during humanities time on earth (note i didn't say faster than any time in all history), and the data points to a reasonable conclusion its changing much faster than it would without human forcing. We know climate changes all the time but the changes are usually slow allowing species to adapt... question now is will it change faster than we can adapt, and if so can we do something about it. This is smart science that is about saving people, not just saving some exotic bird.

The deniers like to say "follow the money" and claim some great conspiracy of millions scientists becoming rich off 'government' grants all colluding to make this stuff up. If you really want to follow the money look at the trillion dollar fossil fuel industry that really have the most to lose if all this is proven right. Many elements of said industry are in fact diversifying into alternative energy because they know its real as well, even as they keep paying lobbyists to spread doubt (mostly as a tactic to give them time to evolve to new industries) Many of the most prominent deniers are well known paid lobbyists for the FF industry... prime example mr. junk science Steven Milloy (the same way he attacks the links between smoking and lung cancer on the payroll of the tobacco industry)

I can go on, but Ill leave it there before this thread locks.

Right where I want to be.
Personally, I've found wishful thinking to be quite useful.:D
Our day to day forecast has been changed so often in the last 3 days, I'm starting to get dizzy.
Oh, and just to be clear, the Earth is flat. The best scientists in the world said so.
