Another full load

3rd night with a full load.
Past 2 night loads have gone 24 hrs but
it's been in the mid to high 20s for the past 2 days & nights.
Didn' light off quick, so I put a few strips of bark between a few splits
some down in the gap in front & lit it, then a small kindling piece,
in less than 5 min, a raging fire.
Love birch for quick lights & up to temp quick.

over 1/3 of a cord of ashes in the stove so it don't hold as much now.




24 hour low burns , the glass blackens on the sides.


To be single digits & below zero starting tomorrow night. the black will burn off with a hotter fire.
Forecast is for -4°f tomorrow night.

Feel the heat !

 

Best I have ever done on a load was 7 hours and it was Honey locust , but sadly its all gone

 

That dissent seem right y'all must had a warm front cause it was 21F last night here in SC!! Y'all were only 12?

 

Beautiful site Dave.....next time load it with some birch so we can see how it compares to burning birch and while it catches get some birch ready for the next load.

 

Maybe I'll use just Birch for the next few load to compare,
OATs dropping, should have some effect.
Then go back to Birch LOL

No 24 hour burn tonight thru tomorrow evening with that temp.

 

That would be asking A LOT out of 11 splits. How many sqft are you heating.

Dave, have you weighed any of those birch loads?

 

Did that last winter for some one,
never got the results back or what he wanted the info for.

Give me the formulas & process & maybe I can try it again.

Did a reload at 1130 this AM, burning hotter .(15 hr burn )
Forecast was wrong at the -4°


Was -8°, at picture time was up to -6
Now (1230 pm) -3°

 

With out the glare, I see the coldest temp n the last 24 hours was -9°

That's what the high valley looks like when IRS really cooking too! Maybe 4-5 hours into a good medium rate burn for me.

 

I started actively looking for used BK stoves. It will probably take me several months before I find one that I can pick up. Whichever comes first, a Princess or a King, I'm giving one a try. I prefer the Princess since, if that works, that would mean the Ashford would also work for me.

The glass is looking good burning that hot.

 

Cleaned it last February .
Not one of the things that bugs me. Previous stove had a metal door.
Basement .
Even a little dirty, I can see it burning.
Shoulder season it get dirty but even then, 1/2 the glass is clean enough to see

Dry wood!

Birch & spruce both have resin in the splits, cause the dirty glass , but
Burned hot, it burns off.

Wonder if ash & other east coast dry, hardwoods would burn cleaner ?

 

If I find a used one before I commit to another stove solution, I'll let you know.

 

Yep they will. I burn southern yellow pine in my cat stove. There is tons of resin in the splits even dried to below 20%. Black smoke will still wisp with a full load. Wisps not rolling. It will blacken my glass more than oak. But oak put in and burned at similar setting will clean it up.

Wet oak is worse than the dry pine though.
