    ash load 1.jpg

Picked this up on Sunday. Utility company dropped several trees and this homeowner gave the bounty away after I asked for it. I'm guessing about a cord once split. If I wasn't a seasonal worker, I'd have gotten alot more of the fallen trees. This is all I had time for.

2 loads totalling about 4,000 pounds green I'm guessing. Had the truck squatting on the second load which I posted as a the first pic. Sad thing is...the main trunk which was left standing had at least 3,000 pounds more, but I didn't have time to fall it and pick it up. I love me some ash.

441 8 pin 16 inch bar set-up made quick work on the fallen logs. Tree service had done much of the processing, but I had a chance to run the saw some too. Was a good day for sure. The trees I saw laying on the ground ranged from locust to maple and this ash. The locust is in a church yard. The ground is soft, so I can't get at the locust without getting stuck or tearing up their yard, which I won't do out of respect.

Nice score! Ash is great wood. I don't get to burn too much of it as all the ash around here has not been affected by the EAB.

Ash is the best compromise wood. Burns hot and dries quick.

Yeah we have 3 very large ash in my yard by the house. I've burned branches, and its great wood. If, or when it gets EAB, I'll have many years of wood. I just can't think about that as that would be about 50% of our mature trees at the house.

EAB will get all of them in time. I love ash. Way better than maple, but not as many btu as oak. The drying time makes up for it's lower heat output.

I hope you are wrong about the EAB. I use the bayer tree granules every year to keep them, even if it makes me feel good. There plenty of wild ones not in peoples yards not affected for miles around my town. Outside of the 3 big ash, and a couple smaller ash, a couple birch, a silver maple, a different non native bigger maple, a choke cherry, a couple fir trees, and a Honey locust. The closest affected trees are about 20 miles away.

I hope I am wrong too. You can replace them with locust and have good firewood 15 years later.

Horkn, just keep in mind that they do not show anything when they are first infected. It takes a couple years before you'll notice unless you can get to the trees (which you can in your yard but may not be able to in other spots). I not so fondly remember when we got the bug here. We quickly cut some trees and it did no good as far as stopping the borer. One of the first things noticeable is the new suckers the trees will send out. Trying to save itself but it doesn't work. Of course getting close to the trees it is not difficult to find the holes.

90% of the trees in this picture are no longer there because of the EAB.

    And here is the bandit.

If someone was not knowledgeable you would look at this tree that just got bucked up and also the still standing tree to the right and one could easily think there was nothing wrong. These trees have been dead about 8 years now.

Great score man.. Couldn't agree more with this either.. Really is the ultimate wood for fast drying and it's burning characteristics..

Yeah, I hear ya Dennis. Our trees show no sign yet of EAB. I'm always looking for the dirty little bugger as most of my 1 acre is mowed grass, and these trees are all near the house and driveway. I've never seen one yet, or on my walks around town. My trees have no suckers either.
So far, the ash I have has been super healthy, to the point I need to cut a big branch that hangs low and blocks sun from my roses, and hangs down by where I park my boat.
I also won't take any ash from my wood cutting lots in an area where EAB has been. There never was ash there anyway, but if I see one, I'll let my cutting buddy have it as his house is right by the lots I cut wood on.

I'm just hoping for the best, and using the bayer product thats been proven to work. but if they get EAB, I'll have years worth of wood.

Nice score FC. I do get bored with cutting just ash. With that said and the cold weather not breaking for maple season I think that big down oak I have yet to cut up will be in,the backyard soon.

There is so much dead from EAB it really is a shame. In the summer you can pick out dead ash in woodlots from 1/2 mile away.

Primo score, firecracker. That there is a tough working truck. There is hardly a gooder sight than a couple truckloads of great wood coming home. I love ash for firewood.
