I went to the local butcher, and got 2 smoked ham hocks. I cooked them down on Friday, and got 12 cups of broth. That night I placed the Navy Beans in cold water and soaked them for 12 hours. The following day I cooked the beans down in the ham broth, with the spices, and celery and onion. When the beans were tender I added the ham back in. It was delicious and I want to make some more and freeze it. I used this recipe for the spices: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Basic-Ham-and-Bean-Soup/. I had left over broth, so I cooked some potatoes down with canned greens beans from the garden, and made a side of buttery corn bread!
Lol Thank You! I have to wait till after dinner before I check out this section of the forum! You do not want to come here with a empty stomach.
Here is my all time favorite corn bread recipe, if you get a chance give it a shot! http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/buttery-corn-bread
Oh, that looks good. My old neighbor used to make that and send some over. He added a little Tony Chachere's creole seasoning to it for a nice kick.

Your cornbread looks great! Have you ever tried cooking your cornbread in cast iron? Just put the cast iron in the oven while it is preheating, then butter the hot pan and pour the batter in the hot pan
I have never tried the cast iron method, I will have to look into that. I have some cast iron pans but there the newer kind, and I have not messed with them much. I wish I had some old seasoned cast iron pans!
that looks delicious. Made a small pot of split pea & ham last week, its gone now.A few weeks back (between making French onion twice) it was 3 lentil with mushrooms, carrots & barley added. Havent decided what its gonna be for later in the week/weekend yet, maybe that Tourtiere for a change from soup/stew (French Canadian meat pie),its been a year since I had one.
We don't have any butchers here.......dang shame too. Slaughter houses.......yep. Real butcher shop........nope.
