Was grinding a few chains monday when I heard a pop and felt it as well. I could not tell what it was and just went on. Then I quickly realizes the head was not moving up and down correctly. And it popped again as I moved it again. Turns out the pin that holds the head to the base backed out of the right side and the spring then leveraged the head up and away from alignment and each move allowed the spring to "unspring" a little bit more. The spring is so strong I cannot force it back into alignment. So I called customer service and got a return number. I will carry it back to the store and await my new one to be shipped to me I dont think I even did 10 chains on it
Here is the unit. Look at the hinge area. See the shiney metal, that part should not be seen. It should ride under the part that is lifting away and that about 3/8 pin should be driven through both sides.
This is the one that like half the folks here have. Its an Oregon copy and the same unit as the timbertuff just yellow instead of green. DexterDay , swags , and Pallet Pete all have this same unit. There was a thread back in october letting everyone know it was back on sale for $99 with a $20 coupon off $100. So I ordered it and a pair of safety glasses for like $85 before tax. All of them plus many other satisfied members here that have the same one.
Nate had the same issue with his.. Strange, I never had the problem, nor did others. I say mine, but I just sold it. Shipping tomorrow. I am reverting back to filing. This is the same unit as Clems, but in Green (Timber Tuff).
I was thinking I was thinking Nate had an issue with the head on his. He had the Timbertuff unit and he bought his on amazon.
And it wasnt the way I was working it. I wasnt "cowboying" it or anything. I was actually just setting it up for a new chain when it popped out. Grinder wasnt even on!
Nope.. Mine did the same thing... Take the pressure off the spring and line it back up, and tap the pin back in... I just keep an eye on mine now. Probably 250-300 chains through it by now.. Can't remember what exactly I did, but it was no problem.. I love that stupid grinder...
I guess I could of tried to mess with it bit it was under warranty. I would of had to maybe stick a screwdriver in there and pry that spring finger down to line it back up but as it sat no amount of force moved the head to line the holes back up. I was going to be back near a store in 2days after it happened so I just opted to return it. I will keep an eye on it from now on on the next one.
Take motor cover off. Remove big white capacitor... Re-land wires minus capacitor in the way.. Button up.. Throw capacitor in trash.... Then when you turn the grinder on, you just flick the wheel in the direction you want it to spin and electricity does the rest..
Ok so I went to let the dog in the front door thismourning (let her out the back) and sitting in front of my door was my replacement grinder!!! Either came yesterday afternoon (this is when ups/fedex run out here) or this mourn if from PO but since all the box was showing I dont think PO sends packages like that? I'm button one of the others. Didnt get a pic but its just the grinder in a box. That was a pretty quick turnaround Edit: went and looked at the box as all I did before was carry it in. UPS label on it. And here is a pic.
Thanks for bumping this. I put it togeather last weekend and the depth control screw was so bent I could not screw it in all the way. Called northern, they sent a replacement from rough neck. Its not black but a reddishbrown. But who cares it works. The replacement came yesterday.
As far as I know Nate has not had any trouble with his new one I haven't had any problem with mine but I don't do that many chains either
