Been doing a little research on saws. I have had a interest in the ms461. I have read that the air filter getting dirty quicker is a problem. Obviously thats something to pay atten to on any saw. However is this a problem that im going to have to check each time I refuel and oil.
I typically run my saws during the course of the day then when work is done go back blow them off clean them up have them ready for the next days work.
Basically I am asking the ones who own them are you having to clean the filter in the field during the course of 6-8 hrs cutting up firewood

I used to have one and although most of my cutting was green wood, I didn't have a problem with it clogging quicker than normal. I use Outerwears prefilters which helps quite a bit too.

I carry a small brush and brush out the air filter when I refuel. It takes an extra 30 seconds to brush the filter off.

I do too. Easiest and quickest PM you can do to a saw.

I would assume so - has the same filter setup as the 460.

Agree with others that these are quicker to plug. Nothing like a prefiltered 261/261c that I used to run. I like the idea of carrying a brush...I've been knocking the filter against the bumper of my truck every couple tanks. The big stuff falls right out.

It's possible they updated it like I believe they did with the 362, but the early one I had used the standard HD filter.

I thought they did have it where you could take the cover off and run it without the cover.

    I have a nrw
I have a new 461, only a few weeks old, and I've only used it a couple of times, once for about 4 hours. I was aware of the air filtration concerns before I bought it so I checked the filter after each hour of operation just for curiosity. I found noting unusual with the filter. I was cutting and bucking some ash (posted pictures earlier) so results could vary with wood types and condition of the wood as well as humidity. I ask the Stihl dealer about a pre-filter like the one on my 660 and my former 441 but they said they didn't make one for the 461. I don't know why the band for the 66o wouldn't work because the filter appears to be the same. The pre-filter band on the 441 looks the same as well.

You are right up the street from me so If you'd like to try my 461 before you buy on just let me know. :drunk: I added duel dogs and a roller catcher to mine.

I have a 460 that I bought new 3 or 4 years ago. At that time I remember the dealer swapping out air filters for me to the hd2 or something along that line?

I've cut a bunch of wood with it and usually clean it every other tank . I'll admit I have missed it a time or 2 and just the other day I was cutting and the saw wouldn't idle?,Hmmmmmm, I do use premium ethanol free 100% gas and this was really odd? Shut it down, cleaned dirty air filter and she ran like new again!

Kubota of Florence and Ideal Farm Supply in Walton. Once I used Crescent Springs Hardware, there is a story there I'll have to tell you about off line sometime.

Never ran a 460, but you can cut alot of wood on 2 tanks with a sharp chain on a stock 461...imo it really ain't much trouble to clean these filters every other tank, but I admit it would be real nice to have that 441c air filtration system if it was anything like a 261c.:smoke:
