I was looking (not too seriously yet) at the predator units at harbor freight. It seemed they have won some awards for value and was kinda curious as a back up to run my well/ fridge if needed. Again, it is a down the road purchase but get ads on them all the time and they have some fairly expensive units for the store they are coming from. I am a firm believer in " you get what you pay for" but every once in awhile there is an underdog that people over look as well

As I type this my area is under a blizzard warning with 2-3 feet of snow expected in my yard. We're under a state of emergency and power outages are all but certain when the wind is howling 60+mph. I'm lucky enough to have a whole house stand by generator which I installed when I moved into my house 1 1/2 years ago. Prior to that I used my Honda EU2000 generator to get through a couple of tropical storms and another blizzard.

Without question when the weather becomes a life threatening event having a generator is a game changer. The last blizzard I lived through in 2013 we lost power for 2-3 days and between my generator and my wood stove the storm was nothing more than a minor nuisance. However, many unprepared people damm near froze to death and countless home's suffered damage from frozen/burst pipes.

A generator can be a life and property saving tool. If you can afford to own one then by all means purchase it.

My elderly mother has the same Honda EU2000 as I do and she burns wood as well. she too made it through all the above mentioned event's with nothing more than minor annoyance.

The key to a generator is don't forget about it when the weather is nice. Once a storm is over I drain the gas station gas from the generator and run it dry. Then I add a few quarts of Tru-Fuel 4 cycle non-ethanol gas which has a 2 year shelf life. Then, every time I vacuum a vehicle I fire up the generator to run the shop vac so it get's exercised. Usually vacuum 2 times a month. Add quart of canned fuel as needed.

My whole house generator run's on propane and exercises itself every two weeks. Change the oil once a year.

Am I a little nut's with generator maintenance, yes. Does my (and mom's) generator always work, yes.

Final words on this topic. GO BUY IT.

Honda's in my opinion are the best portable generators out there. They sip fuel and are much quieter than others. But you will pay a premium for them.

That Honda EU2000 is the bee's knees. If you are thinking of selling it, let me know!
HDRock, what are you planning to use it for. 4000w is pretty light for a whole house application but is better than nothing in an outage

Yamaha generators are right up there in quality with the Hondas.

For a backup generator, stick with an electric start engine! Your wife/kids will thank you!

I have a King Craft which has the same control panel as the one you pictured. The same generator is sold through O'Reilly's. It works well & starts easy in the summer but in the winter, I take the recoil off & have to use a cordless drill to start it. I plan on selling it & buying a Harbor Freight generator with electric start. I have other Predator engines & have been happy with their performance.

Try looking at Kipor gen sets. Chinese made so they are still 1/2 the price of a Honda and parts are available. I have been having very good luck with them. Generac is the same deal just priced to match all their advertising. And we do quite a bit of warranty work on the generac stuff

I have sold quite a few of the kipor diesel gen sets to oil field and have yet to work on Any of them. $1500 for diesel 5000 watt compared to a kohler brand diesel 5k at $7500
