It's going down to 12° tonight. Can't remember when it was this cold in November here before. The Farmer's Almanac might be right about this winter after all.
Posted twice so we'd get the point? It was 6 this morning here. At least the wind died down today. Yep, we're in some sort of space-time continuum where it's really January, but we all think it's November. Worm hole...that's it. Gotta' be a worm hole. A really cold one.

Deer hunting in Maine last week and the rut was behind schedule. That means hard winter is likely. Mother Nature keeps the breeding cycle in sync with spring thaw. More snow and sustained colder temps will push that thaw further into the spring, therefore it is best to drop fawns later. We'll see.
We had the wind at 20-35mph all day long yesterday and didn't get above 32°. Did wonders for the arthritis.
So much for the nice weather down south. I was in Aiken one January and it was in the 70s. Go figure?
Estrus cycle in whitetails is triggered by photo period. Basically time of daylight in a day. Temp plays a small role as well just like you try not to cut your grass on the day its 99f even though its summer and u need to cut it.
I agree for the most part clem. I also believe that nature has a way of adapting/reacting to changes. If it was the case that photo was the only trigger, why would the rut vary so much throughout the country?
Were all on a different attitude? I dunno? Have enough hours for a wildlife minor although I don't actually have one. Just not time enough while in school to get it. Plus the classes spanned udergrad and grad school. Point saying this is that some of my knowledge is scientific some from hunting but little hunter repeat "wives tales". Seriously don't really know answer other than god controlls all his creatures and makes it where they have a chance to survive.
Got down to 15.8 degrees last night and the winds have finally abated! Good to see my tarps that I clamped down wherever possible on the wood shelter held up OK
We hit zero this morning, the Beech & Sugar Maple still had the basement at 77 this morning, upstairs was 67. We're burning a combo of Cherry & Pine splits this morning.
