I just purchased my second pellet burner. A Fahrenheit endurance. I picked it up used for $1100. It's the old style with manual ignition, but from what I can tell it does have an updated burn pot.

Anyway, I have about 3000 bushel of spoiled wheat I traded into. It cost me a couple of tractor tires that weren't much good anyhow. At about 90 tons of fuel, I think I came out alright.

Has anyone here burned wheat? Any tips, tricks, or precautions? I am really hoping to heat my well insulated, 1200 sq ft house + 1200 sq ft basement (built with ICF) with only the pellet furnace and radiant floor heat in basement. I do have an LP furnace as a backup, but I would like to leave that idle as long as I can!

I am going to hook it up directly into my ducting at first and see how it works. If I can't get enough heat through the registers, I plan on hooking it into the cold air return on my LP furnace and use that fan to move heat. I know the manual says it's a no-no, but I'm not entirely sure why?

    Hi,
I'm just trying out rye as we speak and it's cold out there. I will report back on my findings. Welcome aboard. I too have a used manual Fahrenheit. What is the serial #, mine is 2248. There will be others with a Fahrenheit chiming in soon enough.

My serial# is 2232. I'm interested in your findings! What is the moisture content of your rye?

Don't know. Is there a way to figure it out? I seen a tester at TSC store so I might have to pick one up.

Never burned wheat. The strangest fuel I've ever burned was cherry pits in my 6041 insert.

How many registers do you have on the ductwork off the LP furnace? I don't know all the scientific reasons for not connecting the pellet furnace to the cold air return, but I believe it has to do with potentially making a 'loop' through the LP furnace and not circulating the air properly. A 10" butterfly damper on the Fahrenheit and some type of damper in the plenum of the LP furnace would be the preferred way to hook it up.

I think you'll be fine hooking it into your current LP duct work for a house of that size. If you have dampers in the duct work you may need to close a few of those, but you should be fine. I have a St. Croix SCF 050 hooked into my duct work, and I closed about half the dampers to help boost the airflow. The St. Croix has an 800 CFM blower, same as the Fahrenheit. My house is 2400 sq ft, and has a lot of duct work.

Good Luck. Can't help you with the wheat thing. That's a LOT of wheat...

It's not that big of a deal, I was just curious. I have a moisture tester, but the only reason is to let me know when crops are ready to harvest!

I have 7 right now, but I will probably be adding a few more downstairs. However, they will be blocked off as soon as I get the floor heat hooked up. Hopefully for next heating season!

I decided to build a hopper extension today. I calculated it out at holding another 2.5 bushel/150 pounds of wheat. I still need to slap on a some paint, get some gasket to go between the furnace and hopper, and get some hinges to fit the lid. But other than that, I think it's ready to go. I'm happy with how it turned out. I have about $40 into it thus far. That's better than the $230 Fahrenheit quoted me for theirs.

Haha, while i did go with selkirk, I didn't opt for the DT. Too rich for my blood!

I picked that accentra up off Craig's list a couple weeks ago. It was advertised as "Harman iron stove" so I don't think it got much attention. I paid $500 which seems to me was a great deal. They bought their house with the stove in it and never used it. I gave it a good cleaning and it runs like a champ!

I don't really have any plans or use for it, just one of those things that was a good deal so I bought it haha. I'm sure I will throw it up on CL next fall or something.

It was built in 2012 if that helps determine it?

I'd double your money; ) lol

I would keep the Harman in case the furnace doesn't work out. Being a manual fire unit means Shoulder season will be a pain.

That Harman will be better in the Shoulder seasons.

I run my Enerzone freestanding stove upstairs in the shoulders and my Fahrenheit in the Deep cold.. Mine is an auto ignite model, but I still mainly use it in Tstat mode and let it run constantly.

I would definitely not consider the cold air return. For the main reason that if anything happens? It is not UL listed to he connected and ran like that, so your insurance will not cover any damages

Run it as it should with backdraft dampers on your existing furnace and the pellet furnace and you should be good to go.
