Anyone do any model railroading. I have a pile of n scale stuff waiting to set up when I have the space. Currently have a cat so the trains are on hold. Here is some of it on a small 2' x 4' test layout.
I have some HO scale stuff. I have an engine, caboose and boxcars from the bicentennial in 1976. I was able to go on the "Freedom Train" that passed through the northeast and stopped at a few cities. I think my dad has pics on slides. Train shows were huge back in the 1970's. We did start a layout, but lost interest after a few years. Yes, we scraped a lot of cat puke off the scenery.
With the smaller scale stuff if the cat plays with it, it can get destroyed, so when we moved and I lost the space with the door I could close it stayed in the cases and got put in the right hand drawers of my computer desk. My brother and I had an O-27 setup back back in the 50's and 60's that gave way to me getting an HO scale setup in the 70's and 80's then N scale in the 90's. I got out of it until late summer of 2004 when I picked up a DCC controller and a couple of locomotives. I now have more than a couple of locomotives and plenty of rolling stock. It is surprising how many train cars fit in a desk drawer in N scale. There are five locomotives in that partial section of my old test layout. The other thing that is crazy is you can easily end up with spending several hundred dollars per square foot with a "toy" train.
I have always loved model trains, since I was a young boy. Being I'm a 6th generation railroader, I guess you could say its in my blood!! I helped my son start a small HO layout that slides under his bed, eventually we're going to build a larger layout. But ever Christmas, we set up a VERY big 027 layout under the Christmas tree. Usually 3-5 trains, we've got some fantastic vintage Lionel and Marx trainsets, some dating to the early 1940's......I'll hey to muster up some photos later (I'm on the Android right now) of our layouts from years past. We're going to so a big tree and layout this Christmas as we are now finally in our remodeled hearth room.......I'm as excited as the kids this year!!! Great thread, Smokey!!
I kept going down in size because I would like to model something like Northern Maine Junction where the (Fallen Flags now) Maine Central and Bangor and Aroostook Railroads had their interchange. This was also the service facility for BAR. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=northern+maine+jucntion+hermon Which is quite large in real life but could have fit in the basement of my prior house in N Scale with a bit of modification. I started collecting both MEC and BAR locomotives and an assortment of rolling stock.
OK, logged onto the PC and dusted off some pictures of Christmases past........ Nothing real fancy, it's around 12-14' long, almost 6' wide on the fat end...... The trains are antiques, the Lionel 259E train is original paint and everything.....the two Marx M10000 trains I restored for my sons.......all of them run like a Swiss watch!
The 4th grade teacher (Principal Alice Green) used to ask the kids in her class if they had any electric trains to bring them in and setup a layout for the decoration in her classroom during the Thanksgiving/Christmas time frame. It certainly kept the boys in line. See guys, even a hard nosed principal isn't so bad after all.
Was into HO stuff fairly heavily from about age 12 to 15 or so...Childhood friend when we were about 10-11 had a huge layout of 1940's S gauge stuff in his parent's basement.I sold or traded most of the track, rolling stock in later years.Still kept a few things I didn't want to part with that are now boxed up in spare room near the attic of this 97 yr old house.1970's Rock Island red/yellow paint scheme passenger car set, bunch of assorted freight cars, several locomotives with both 1970's paint schemes (including the late '70's sky blue/black The Rock) when RI was in its death throes....Most of the buildings/scenery was damaged over the years, very little of that remains.
That is "wicked good" Fantastic way to display the tree and the train. I bet that became a Christmas to remember.
Lookey what I found packed away.... (Ignore the dust, please LOL) I could probably get $150 for everything, but this is just about all that remains of my childhood stuff - everything else was either destroyed, damaged, lost when growing up & the good toys remaining I sold most of them for a decent price in the past 10 yrs or so.... My toys are different now - just are bigger, cost more & are more dangerous
I don't know what your stuff is worth thistle, but don't sell it short. I see three locomotives in there do they still work?
1 is a "dummy",the other 3 (1 switcher,2 freight) did last I remember, but that was well over 20 yrs ago.I think the controller/other electrical stuff went bad & was tossed out years ago cause I couldn't find it in the attic anywhere. I also had a big 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive with forgotten markings, but didn't find that either last time I looked.
If it was true to form that 4-8-8-4 (Big Boy) was marked as an Union Pacific engine as they were only built for UP.
Now I'm curious - don't remember exactly but it may have been 2-8-8-4,its been a long time since I seen it.
2-8-8-4 are Mallets and were operated by 4 US Railroads, Southern Pacific, Northern Pacific, Baltimore and Ohio, and Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range. SP had some cab forward versions that were easier on the engineer when the coal burner was in tunnels.
