Correction. Don't think I have a battery issue. Might start another thread. Still hate buying batteries though.

I finished charging that battery the other night and got the chance to put it in the tractor earlier this evening. Was just starting to get to dusk when I tried it. It took cranking it over a good many times, but then it started and ran great. I moved the brush hog and York rake out of the way for plowing, then parked it in the attached, heated garage. I need to give it a bath in the next few days and see if I can figure out how to get it to charge the battery the way it is suppose to.

i actually prefer the manual rather than the automatic charger. advantage of auto is you hook it up and go away. advantage of the manual is you can use it for hydrolysis (removing rust).

How old is that tractor? - not old enough to be 6V system I'd assume.
Without a meter you aren't figuring out anything;)

I bet your charger wasn't bad. At 4 amp max it just couldn't "force" a dead battery right away. Hook the old charger up now & I bet it works. As for the tractor, it's a very simple system to test & repair. Check the belt, cables, then the output from alternator/generator. Should 13.5 to 15.6 volts. Anything different either a bad voltage regulator, or alternator. 5 min test with a voltmeter. A C

I think it is between a 1957 and 1961. Somewhere in there.

I also think it was probably a six volt at one time, then converted to a twelve.

Has an alternator, looks like a GM, on it now but probably use to be a generator. ?

more than likely had a generator with an external voltage regulator.
Alternators have the diodes built internally and no brushes to wear out.
....Just break down and buy a meter already - this is a pretty simple diagnostic fix unless you have a ground somewhere:popcorn:

I have an old charger that did not work. I trashed it. Did you buy that charger? The big one? Its a bit overkill if your not wrenching or charging many batteries.

Event though the battery is fairly new, it could still have a bad or weak cell. Do you have battery load tester? Unless you can place a load on the battery while checking it you frequently will not be able to detect the bad/weak cells. A load tester is also handy for testing alternators / generators. If both the battery & alternator test well time to check for bad connections & bare/shorting wires. A couple of options to use when a battery will not be in use for a while is a floating trickle charger & to have a isolating switch on the battery to make it easy to disconnect the battery until you need it again.

    Wish you the best.

I did buy that charger. Charged the battery m, then realized I wanted the next model up which was 30 $ more. So I returned the one I bought and they ordered me the next model up, none in stock at any of the stores. I know I don't really need that big of one, but for $130 bucks it gives me a charger, jump start, and tester all in one. With two pieces if machinery and our vehicles it will come in really handy.

:eek:I think I fixed the tractor myself! o_O

What? I had some time today to work on the equipment. Because it was raining and nasty out in the morning.

First thing I did was fix a hydraulic fitting I managed to break on the bobcat. Yes, I do wrench on some of my stuff still. Tractor supply had the threaded 3/8" nipple I needed and another little do-hicky I can't remember the name off. Took about 30 minutes to fix altogether. Plow is back to angling the way it should.

Second was to try and tackle the tractor problem. One wire was off and obviously needed to be replaced and I knew by the length and the fact that it was red that it went to the push button ignition. So I got my electrical stuff out and with a new wire, I then crimped two new eyelets on each end of it, cleaned connections and hooked it up.
Second wire was also red and came from the ignition switch and went to nowhere. Could have gone to a couple of places. But would make sense to go to positive post of battery since the battery was not getting charged. Replaced wire and crimped new end on with large enough terminal end to go over bolt on positive post. Done. Now, why won't the tractor start right up? I noticed I could keep turning it over and nothing. I kept messing with it and noticed that if I left the key switch off and turned it over with push button and then turned switch hard it would almost start and the stop. Then repeat. Almost. Bad switch?
