I need a piece of wood about 2"- 3" thick that I can place into this corner install as a mantle atop the Airstone stone on the walls behind the stove. It can't be very deep because if it extends too far away from the wall it will be too close to my stove pipe, but we want to create a shelf in the corner that comes away from the corner in a traingle about 8" to 12" deep. My daughter wants something that we can hang stockings on so just having the Airstone on the wall behind the stove isn't sufficient. The left hand wall is 28" deep, the rear wall is 45 1/2" across the top of the stone. Any ideas where to find a piece of wood that size? (I don't have the experience to laminate something to fit and make it look decent, so I'm trying to avoid that.)
Beautifull stove Do youhave any Amish or someone with thier own sawmill around that would sell you the wood. You could make your own by grabbing your chainsaw and look for a nice oak make one of the rounds the length you would like. Then noodle the board out.I like to use my Dolkita for noodling. If you don't know what noodling is you lay the round down and cut long way makesthe shavings look like noodles.Maybe someone on the site might have what you need.
People sell thick slabs on CL around here. http://albany.craigslist.org/mat/4795039634.html Beautiful hearth!
Id prolly find a round of hard maple with a not swell or burl and cut a 4" cookie. Most of those swells and burls are pimpled under the bark and look cool . Then 1/4 it in pie shapes using a square so its perfect 90 for the corner. Nock the bark off live edge and seal.
BrianK, If you were closer I could probably help you out but I don't think it would be worth the drive!
I'd say the same BrianK , a local sawmill or someone on CL that may advertise with a portable sawmill might have something.
I have a bunch of gorgeous 8/4 Cherry. I also have a couple of thick 2"+ white oak and walnut planks, too. I'd be happy to dimension them for you. PM me if you are interested. Otherwise, here's 4 great resources that I use. Horizon Hardwoods, Shelvey Summit, PA http://horizonevolutions.com/online-inventory/online_landing.html Alderfer Lumber, Mount Pleasant Mills, PA http://alderferlumber.com/ Groff and Groff Lumber, Quarryville, PA http://www.groffslumber.com/ Hearne Hardwood, Oxford, PA http://hearnehardwoods.com/
That's mighty neighborly. White oak would look good with those floors and the clean lines of the hearth.
