I get one of these kind of questions a year. Here it goes. I store pellets both inside the house and outside under the deck covered up tightly under a tarp. No moisture gets to them. Here is the question, do pellets stored outside in 7 degree temp put out different heat output than those stored indoors at room temp? In other words, if I bring a bag from the outside and dump it right into the hopper and are fed into the stove prior to reaching room temp, do those perform different? like I said, dumb question.

Dunno. I have heard of people noticing condensation in their hopper after using cold pellets. hth

I've heard the same about condensation. I store my pellets in the garage. I always bring two bags inside and let them sit for 8 hours or so before loading.

As long as they're not frozen, I would think they would warm up enough before they hit the burn pot unless your hopper is totally empty.

Totally empty hopper. I will put an IR therm and see if heat output differs.

I read a thread here recently where they were talking about certain stoves that preheat the pellets. Warmed pellets sound like a good idea since I have experienced frozen wood splits are harder to light than room temp wood.

I am too new for a conclusion and add a variable of burning less desireable pellets at the moment, but in sub zero temps its seems to take the stove longer to re-ignite.

I still don't think it will make a difference. Not much different than using outside air when it's cold.

PS, I have asked good questions like yours, as well as remedial questions I learned the answer to months ago, but somehow forgot now that I want to apply the answers in real life. No worries!

Can't imagine it makes much of any difference. By the time those pellets get screwed up the auger flight, I bet the increasing temps will take of any cold.

WW, are you sure you're not referring to pellet vent pipe that pre-heats the incoming air? I don't know of a stove that preheats pellets unless they sit in the hopper a while before being fed to the burn pot.

Don't know either...but it's 7 degrees outside right now and I am heading to my garage to get a bag of pellets (cold as fuk out there) Myopinion is they burn the same!! Ever think we may be overthinking things??

Lol. Never over thinking. I I've. Always been very inquisitive. I took apart my grandpa's radio when n I was 8 just to try to find out how the tuner needle didn't fall down. Lol.

There is NO chance pellet pigs over think things. We just analyze it to a degree that makes it make sense.

I often throw bags right in the hopper from outside temps. No issues that I have seen.
