They don't make em like they used to...

New dishwasher got delivered today! GE Adora - all stainless steel - built in garbage disposal - really nice unit.



I skipped the installation - they wanted another $80. I had to pull the old one out anyway and I knew how it all hooks up. How hard could it be right?

Step #17 - connecting the hot water supply. You'd think they'd give you a standard hose, like you have on your washing machine, or the old dishwasher. Nope - this is what they give you now:



And of course, the only standard sized connector they give you goes on the dishwasher end. Good thing I kept the old hose!

Oh and don't forget the $9.99 "optional" power cord! Guess some folks must be running their modern dishwashers by telekenesis!

 

Not sure about newer electric kitchen stoves, but the power cord used to be "optional".

However, most dishwashers are pre-wired in a little box underneath, and you hardwire to that.
That thing sure is all shiny.

 

Looks like a nice unit.
Installed a Bosch a few years ago. Had to wire in the cord and such, but it wasn't too bad. Love the machine, very quiet. Let us know how your's works out.

 

I assume by power cord it means something that actually plugs into an outlet, I believe most dishwasher's are hardwired, I know mine is as i have replaced 2 of them since I have lived here

 

Looks like there's a white one. It was on sale at Home Depot for $626 - actually it looks like the white one is even cheaper - $583. Shipping was free too. I think the old one was original to the house - 1986. It still got the dishes wet, but that was about it.

The old one had a plug. I haven't replaced a lot of them. I can see a 220 appliance not coming with one, since they can be either 3 or 4 prong. But you'd think a 110 appliance would come with one.

 

can you salvage your old units power cord and wire it into new unit?

 

Well I looked at the old one before I elected to go without the install, so I made sure to order one, along with the $19.99 installation hardware kit. I probably could have salvaged the old one though. I kinda wish I would have paid them now to save me the hassle. It's just not my style though.

 

yeah, I remember having to purchase a install kit as well and something about having to buy a fitting to thread into the bottom of dishwasher that I thought that should of been there when I bought it

 

Dishwasher broke a few months ago, we wash by hand now.

 

I've never seen a dishwasher with a plug for an electrical connection. All of mine have been hardwired.

 

Unfortunately when you do not do this everyday, you can not keep up with the changes. Dishwasher should be hardwired, pigtails are generally a no no now.
The hose supplied is designed to connect to a standard 3/8 shut off which is what is used today.

 

The hose I need is effectively a garden hose. The shut off under the sink is the standard kind you might hook your garden hose or washing machine up to. They use the garden hose sized connector on their end, so I just don't see why they could supply 2 end like that.

Is there a reason the dishwasher must never be unplugged? After looking underneath the old one, I'm thinking the dishwasher should be in the spring cleaning rotation of "appliances that get moved so you can clean under them".

The only reason I can see for going with hard wiring is so you could take up the full cabinet depth and not worry about losing about an inch to the plug. Of course, most other appliances like refrigerators "solve" this problem by using a "flat" 90 degree elbow style plug.

I think the real reason for the changes is to frustrate DIY oriented customers like me, so we elect to pay for the installation next time.

And if I had, I'd bet real money that they would have asked me if they could use the existing lines to speed up the installation.

 

All of my dishwashers have been hardwired as well.

With all the thermonuclear power and laser guidance in your new parts cleaner does it have a setting for removing resin from chains or chips oil dirt and grease from bars? Probably don't want to put power head in there though might get moisture in the fuel.
