I don't think that's it. I'm in a pretty rural area. If I do the same thing and walk into an auto parts store wearing a carhartt coat and chit kickers nobody gives it a second thought.

I feel the same way. I'll be talking to a high school friend "you don't know how lucky you really are. Getting to do what you want and I can't." Well then why don't you do something about it! Go to their rented house and see their shiny new car in the drive. Step inside to see the newest tv & gaming system and 3 bookcases full of bluerays and games.

Why don't you get off your *** and do something!

lukem its amazing how many people our age can't or wont do for themselves. I guess they were taught its ok to just play and never took any interest in what their dad, grandpa, uncle or what have you was doing. Some people realy think they are doing you a favor when they give you advice. My FIL can't stand half the stuff I do that he just has to know how to do better than me. If I raised my kids the way he sees safe everything i have would be covered in rubber and all the sharp edges ground off. To make it worse he grew up on a farm around all that kind of stuff and he's still living. Sometime's it's better to just smile and nod.

Thanks, everyone. Its not just me.

I guess that's the reason why we all keep coming back here. People who understand there is more to life than how much "stuff" you can accumulate, take pride in doing their own work...and doing it well, and enjoy the simple things in life.

May your wood be dry, your beer be cold, and your chain be sharp.

There you go then....don't wash a pair of jeans and shirt for a month or two and use them as needed. Of course they might not let you in the door then either after getting one wiff.

Usually i'm good after a day. I attract dirt like a magnet and most all of my work clothes are stained anyways.

My wife will actually ask me if I'm gonna change. I always just say I am not out to impress someone. If they judge by the way I'm dressed or look in general I probably don't want to talk to them anyways.

I have, and still do on occasion, have to make a parts run covered in mud and/or cow chit when I'm helping out my BIL. He does dairy and construction and I'll trade him hours...I get to learn something in the process...and he helps me out with "heavy lifting" projects. I feel bad asking him to help without giving something back even though he doesn't want anything in return. I've done this for years and have learned enough now that I really only need his help when borrowing equipment is involved. Its been a good deal for both of us. I can feed or layout concrete for a few hours and not feel bad borrowing his backhoe.

I've always been in some type of construction type field. It amazes me to watch guys older than me outwork most of the guys that are younger than me. There are a few young guys that work hard around here but most fall into the trend of "well i get paid the same if i work hard or not."

Untypical of me to be in bed at 6am on a weekday. It was my wifes birthday monday and we went out for
a small celebration. I guess that last beer did me in, got up at 7 :)

One time a buddy had 3 young hogs that needed cut. We set a date and 4 of us went down to get it done. It was late summer and the day before it came a gully washer. You can imagine how we looked & smelled after that. Stopped by the gas station for some MT dews on the way home and you should've saw the peoples faces!  Good times!

I was, and still am, the "skinny guy"....6'3" and 175. Don't look like I'm worth a damm when it comes to manual labor...luckily I'm a lot stronger than I look.

I'm sure he appreciates the help. It gets annoying when all someone does is borrow. Even more so if it always comes back with less fuel in it. But I'll not get that rant started.

I'mjust a few years older than you, I'm still in gen x, and for the most part, gen y'ers just don't get anything that isn't digital. I'm a "suit" as well, changing into jeans, boots, and carhart jacket gives me street cred.... Until they see me get into my Audi. Lol
I'm not adverse to hard work, but if I can use technology to make things easier, I will.
I prove my resourcefulness on a daily basis as far as the hands on / diy/ repair/ maintenance stuff.

I was EXACTLY like that out of hs. Except I am an inch taller. My freshman year at college I got up to 225. Now I'm 240 lbs. ( unless I drink a lot of beer and eat all the stuff I want to).
