I'm planning on fabbing some skis to mount on the tires of my splitter so I can take it over to the farm with my snowmobile once we get some snow, looking for a vintage pair of skis. Need not be pretty or perfect.
Gonna fabricate a cradle for the tire where it will rest on the ski and weld it on the ski, then use a ratchet strap to secure it to the tire/axle, then make a chain limiter so the ski cannot over turn in dips/holes.
Yes but a chain limiter will be there to keep the skis from going "too far". There will be slack in the limiting chain so the skis can move to the contour of the ground. I have the whole thing drawn up inside my head....just kinda hard to explain....lol
A talented guy like you should be able to make plywood ski's, may have to use some steam to bend the ends.
Scotty Overkill ... I've got 2 snowmobile skis with towers for 5/8" (I think, maybe 3/4") axle shafts. These were originally made for an ultralight. They're painted red and ready to go. They'd be perfect for a small tote sled behind a snowmobile too. If you're interested PM me and I'll get pics to you. Oh yeah, it might be possible to use these "with" the tires in a set-up that would be easy to put on and take off... 2 pins.
Granted this is a very old post, however I was wondering how/if your project worked out? I was looking into doing something similar last winter but ended up just bringing everything to the wood lot for processing. I'm still contemplating skis for the splitter possibly someday and came across this setup (you would have to figure out your hub size and still need a set of sled skis). Never ended up doing it yet, but this link really makes me think it'd work.. You'd need a set of slack chains front and back I think, but it'd be pretty eay to build based on this. I was just gonna make a cradle that that tire fit in and ratchet strap the skis to the tires....
I'd be real tempted to just do something like this...make a frame, attach it to some plastic (looks to me like they just cut up a plastic barrel)
I bought my first 350x when I was 15...it was the biggest baddest bike in the neighborhood ('til my cousins buddy got his 250R modded) I got stupid and sold it when I was 19...bought another one a couple years later...still have that one.
Now ya got me second guessing it...there are things in that pic that are wrong for a 200x, a 350x, and 250r...must be a frankenbike.
